At that price, she can make it work! It's a good deal to see if she's serious about the bike thing!

Except that a poor-fitting bike will turn someone off from riding faster than anything but a header into a tree.

I seem to recall about 6 weeks of slowness after the hipshot. :Roflmao We could just call him "the Pelvinator."

I would much rather ride a really nice bike that is the wrong size in either direction than be forced to ride a properly fitting cheap bike.

You can put on a shorter/longer stem, but you can't replace cheap frame and components.

This one is a really nice build (overly burly for a newb), and I think it would be great to decide if you like riding in the dirt.

Even if the rotors are mis-matched.

Not to derail @Grego's thread (but that's what we do) - I had a cheap frame and components for my first "real" mountain bike. It was heavier than sin, but it fit. I rode the crap outta that thing, in places where you wouldn't think I should have. I honestly believe that if it didn't fit I wouldn't have been as much into riding as I am.

I'm on the fit side of this argument as well. I know, it's pretty rare that I agree with @Runs with Scissors about anything - except that riding is fun and ill fitting bikes aren't.

I have a perfect sized bike for @Erckalf's GF - an extra small Titus Motolite, but my wife still harbors delusions of riding it, and I want her to keep those dreams.

Someone will buy this Trance and love it! Great price!!!

My girlfriend is 4'11/5ft. I don't want her stuck on a bike she needs a step stool to get on... Or am I just being dramatic and shell fit fine on the bike?

Anaheim to Fullerton... Quick drive. Take her along and check it out. The standover height shouldn't be an issue. Put her on it and see if the reach is doable...

And have him show you that backwards pedaling beach cruiser he built! :p

This will fit her well IMO. If it were me i'd be headed to fullerton to see if she's comfortable on it.

I think you can figure out my thoughts on the subject :) Standover between the two size is negligible. Her concern is reach and stack. Too much reach is uncomfortable and can lead to neck/shoulder pain and headaches, as sell as perineal area pressure from leaning forward onto the soft tissue. It looks like @Grego already has a pretty short stem on it, so may not be able to pull it back any more.

Stack is height of the bars. If they are significantly above the seat, it ends up changing the intended rider position. More stack isn't bad for a newb, and could increase comfort and perception of control, but isn't what the rest of the geometry was designed for. Negatives include a lightened front end that wanders on climbs, and may not grip as well on cornering. Also puts more body weight on the saddle, so it better fit well or again, soft tissue pain (male or female).

Another data point: XS sized frames often have compromised geometry with wonky head and seat tube angles, as well as proportionately too high handle bars (stack). Especially on 29ers, which I would suggest avoiding in that size. A 27.5 bike might have some of that. She may find that she really needs to get a 26" bike. That actually helps her in finding a used one, as prices on 26ers have dropped off.

Please don't compromise on the sizing. I'm not suggesting that at all! As @herzalot and @Runs with Scissors point out, poor sizing can ruin the stoke. But check out this bike, it's a good one and a great price. And she'll have a nicer bike than you, which she'll be able to brag about!!!

This might be a good pick-up for my son. He's only a bit over 5' but he's 11 and growing like a weed.

Gearing is probably pretty tall on 1x10 though?

I say let her ride it. The stand over height on this will probably work.
