I like my 800mm wide bars but there are some consequences that come with them. My right wrist has been beginning to hurt from the acute angle. I find that I curl my pinky finger under as a shim on top of the grip to straighten my wrist in less demanding moments on the bike.

I went to the Ergon Website and while they make some incredible products, I have no idea what I’m looking for. Living in upper Siberia of Canada, I don’t have a lot of bike shop options to go check them out.

So, looking for suggestions from someone that has Ergon grips or some grip that you found that shims your outer palm to straighten my wrists.

Want to get these for Kokopelli,

    Thanks in advance!

Was just at Incycle yesterday and they had quite a few options by Ergon and others. Maybe we can swing by there after tomorrows ride.

GP1 is their basic model. Start with that and see if it helps. Avoid the bar-end ones... my clavicle speaks poorly of them.

Ran into @UPSed and Jennifer at China Flats a few days back and noticed she had some Ergons on her fancy bike. I really liked the looks of those so let’s ask Ed if he can get us a model number for those grips.
I was thinking of the same thing for Koko. A grip with a small wing or platform for wrist support

That looks like a gear shift knob! I can't see how that is comfortable?

Jennifer has the Ergon GA3 model on her new build and likes them. First bike in 20 years that she does not have bar ends on.

Oh I can! When I stop and really look at how my wrist is almost at Max angle, these could really compensate.

Love the Ergon grips! Recently was happy with the GE-2. Went with the GA-2 Fat this time and I'm liking the extra cush...

before cutting try to test of a 760 bar.
You might find 760 perfect, or you might realize the 800 is the best for you.
Once you cut it is hard to put the chopped 20mm back on.

@Mikie, I've run numerous sets of Ergons. On every long ride I use them. Gs1, GS2, GP2. I go for the GS1 most because they're light and small.

Any grip with a fin will give relief from bar palsy, but for me, the main thing the fin does is give me something to hold when doing the fake bar end grip. Doing that periodically, or even the extreme, turning your wrists 180° outward, gripping with palms forward, does a lot to keep wrists happy.

Because handlebars for rad MTBs have absolutely terrible geometry for long hours. The lack of backsweep can be a killer, which is why H-Bars and other designs for touring have considerable backsweep. The geo of, say, a 23° backsweep Salsa Bend bar makes a massive difference. You don't need to wrist twist at all with a handlebar designed for long rides. To me, this looks like the ultimate bar for long days in a row: http://carverbikes.com/parts/cockpit/myti-carbon-handlebar/

Yea, sorry, they don't look endurah, but neither do Ergons or sun visors. :geek:

Less than $20 for bar extenders isn't so hard.

Wow those are some radical bars. Their current width max is 710mm. They certainly have my attention. Thanks brothah!

Try rotating your bar (on your stem). you might find that a minute adjustment reduces the angle and stress on your wrist.
Another fix might be focusing on bending and raising your elbows (that might get old quickly on an all-day ride).

Super wide bars exacerbate the wrist angle problem. An 800mm bar is not doing anything for you just motoring along. It's for control when things get rad. There's a reason bikepacking bars don't come in rad widths. I used this (the 23°) on the Divide, 39 days in a row: https://salsacycles.com/components/category/mountain_handlebars/bend_deluxe
If they made it in CF I'd be on it.

They're actually quite comfortable. That said, I initially bought those grips for my mountain bike, didn't like it, so I put them on my commuter/road bike. They work wonderfully on that bike. I would go with a smaller platform on my mountain bike as well.

I use these with mini barend on the ends Good wrist support.
Those bars with the sweep I would think put more pressure on the outer side of the wrist. Some sweep is good but the one Pic seems too much

Oh yeah, I LOVED the GS2 ones, that little nub on the end was perfect for hanging off of.
But those + wide-ish bars + heavy brush + lazy technique conspired against me and led to a broken clavicle a few years ago.

Wider bars help decrease that wrist bending outward, makes sense the greater comfort

    Brett is correct.
I rode with Mrs. imtbtrails at Tapia today and stopped by inCycle in Santa Clarita and checked out All grips. None of them compensate for wide bars and redirect wrist angle.
Although I did pick up a pair of the GS1-S, I’m going to confirm my bar width and probably cut them down a bit. I really appreciate all the very sound advice!

Used to use the GP1's for more support for many years, eventually found they interfere with my loosely holding the grip and allowing it to rotate in my hand. Switched to ODI Rogues, felt much better when things really get crazy and let me leave some of the movement in the bar/finger interface rather than transmitting it all to my arm. Putting weight on the bars is probably the wrong thing to do anyway.

Currently trying the SQLab 16 bars. Not fully sure what I will end up with, going to try 12 also but I think perhaps more sweep is good. Used a normal backsweep bar after I switched and my wrists were numb and sore. Might be something to the increased backsweep.
