I want to get a tailgate pad for a full size Dodge Pickup to carry bikes. So I have some questions.
    • Is there one that stands out as better than the rest?
    • Are any lockable to the tailgate?
    • Has anyone ever had one stolen? Seems easy to steal.
    Thanks!
    Mikie

My solution has always been the ghetto H2G2 method...towel. Cheap, not likely to get stolen, easy to store, etc.:thumbsup:

That’s how I roll, too, via a large blanket bought from a thrift store.

My friend had one stolen. I only use mine when carrying more than 2 bikes and I take it off otherwise. I don't think there are any standouts but I would look for one that has a tie down for each frame.

I thought about getting one at one point, but the tailgate on my Ram is too wide, so the bike would ride up too high.

The one Tony linked to is nice and as far as locking it I run a cable through the tailgate handle flap and lock it to the hitch.

My buddy has this one on his new full size Dodge as well. He also has the sliding cover so that keeps it from being stolen

Yep. When I had the truck I built one. $20 of materials and a couple of hours. I painted mine too for uv protection.
The easiest/quickest/lightest rack I’ve ever used. Bikes in/out in seconds. I still miss it (and the truck.)
It held three bikes, and two more could be put in rear first and upside down.
I used this site. You’ll probably need to adjust based on rotor size and tire width.

Typically I just lay the bike down in the bed of my pickup. I can configure Vince's bike in as well. But on the occasion where we shuttle or some one else needs a ride, I can place up to 5 bikes over the tailgate using the floor mats in the truck over the tailgate. There always there in an instant when I need them. Works just as well as a pad imo.

So what's the latest on tailgate pads? I have an old Dakine that works great for the MTBs but I want something a little nicer for the gravel bikes. Something with the capability to tie them down. Sometimes it feels like they are light enough to be blown right out of the back of the truck.

I supplement the Velcro loops on tailgate pad with a old tire tube that I loop the ends and zip tie and then hook them on truck bed tied owns. This provides the option of running it through the rear wheels for security, just a cheap additive I 'spose.

My tailgate pad always made my road bike really wobbly when mounted in the bed. Didn’t like it. I ended up getting the “Instagater” by Thule. Works great, it’s a secure mount and is easily removable, but it's $160 and only for one bike

    I gots some bikes.
Is this still true? It looks like some of the newer pads have a fold point that's designed for the larger aero shaped tailgates.

I like my big hernia-inducing rack, but a pad would make life easier at times...

My kids bought me a Dakine tailgate pad this past Father's day. I'll use it for when I will have multiple bikes in my truck/social trips that sort of thing. Mostly I use a small U-haul style moving pad with a rubberized tool box drawer liner under it. My bike doesn't slip around and since I don't have straps do deal with-easily removed every ride plus if I want to go through the carwash I don't have to deal with mounting straps that come with the Dakine. The Dakine pad definitely looks way better than my daily U-haul pad.

I don’t think the pad makes a difference. Throw a towel or blanket over the tailgate...then put your bike on. See how it fits on the ends and in the middle.
