The trip was over the summer. No one to go with this year so I took my son And honestly I have no one to share this with. But got the bug to post something. We went to San Rafael near SF to ride china camp for two days. Then went to shelter cove near Eureka to ride the Paradise Trail system fo two days. To say the least, it was blast. My son has improved so much over the last year. He out climbs me all the time. Lol. Bringing him was awesome. I won’t get into many details because there are too many.

I’ve never been to either place, so it was a big adventure, 1500 miles with just a 12 yo can be daunting, but he was a great co pilot. Phone, iPad, and bringing the Xbox (fortnight) helped too. We did a few extra activities which were also a great time. Went to a San Rafael Pacifics baseball game. Drove across the Golden Gate Bridge (at night and in the fog) and the crown jewel of the trip. We went to the humbolt redwood national Forrest. The avenue of the giants was spectacular.

If you get the chance go to both of these trail systems they are highly recommended. I would have loved to ride more but he was pooped most days after so many miles. But well worth the bonding time I had with him.

    Awesome story.

Yesterday I took my son to the share event in Irvine park. It took some convincing to get him off the couch. We were a little late, and we ended up riding alone.
When we got back he told me “dad we should do this more often....”

Yes, you do and thank you. As a father of a soon to be 3 year old and a just turned 1 year old I love seeing posts like this. My son loves riding bikes so far and I haven’t pushed him once, just introduced him to it and bought the right gear.

I used to have plans of camping and surfing the lost coast up there near Shelter Cove but too sharky and I don’t surf much anymore, been wanting to hit the paradise royale trail system ever since I ditched the surf backpacking idea.

    Great post and pics

I forgot to mention, we were up there the day the massive Redding fire started. I wasn’t too worried because we were so far away (170 miles) . But if you look at the top right corner of this picture you can see the haze of smoke. While we were riding it felt like a campfire was burning right down the trail. The boy was not having any of it so I had to cut the ride short. Nothing like driving 700+ miles to ride a trail for 8 miles. Lol
