The tuna are already here but the boat traffic (locally in LA/OC Counties) is such that it scares the fish. I hope you like giant Bluefin because that is what is closest to home at this time.

Seaforth Sportfishing. The boat is the Tribute. Fishes nice, crew and Captains are always great.

We fished 50-35 miles from port.

That's fabulous but I wouldn't know what to do with a monster sized fish like that and I would feel sad about killing such a noble creature. But if you are into that sort of thing, then this is the place to be because this is third consecutive year here that you can get a fish like that AND, the fish are getting bigger each year.

I have made it a point to wait for the schoolie fish to arrive before I go. When those 100 pounders were out there jumping out of the water yesterday, I didn't even grab a rod. I just watched.

  10. Last Saturday we did 175 miles on my friends 26’ boat looking for the cow bluefin. We towed a yummy flyer on a kite in a zone SW of SCI. Saw many boils of football size tuna, but not the big BF we were after.

I dint ride my bike today because...

    The Killer Bones were biting!!!!
    Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!! :D

Got one big ol’ grumpy Calico bass, too and bunch of shorts. We had two stops on the bonito in the morning. I got a few on the first stop but the second stop was a massacre. Bloody decks up and down the boat and we about sunk it with bonito. After that we into the kelp line and picked away at bass. Great trip, flat calm, and foggy.

Yes, for a fee, usually a buck or two per fish. For fish that spoil, like bonito, it's wise to have them cleaned before you get off the boat.

We did some bay fishing over the weekend. Great action on small rockfish along the shore structure and I got a short Sand bass as well. We also got one small Bat ray and one large Thornback ray on the surf rigs.

    Here's the Bat ray....

A man with two buckets of fish was leaving boca chica beach well known for its fishing and was stopped by a game warden. The warden asked the man, "Do you have a license to catch those fish?"
The man replied to the game warden, "No, sir. These are my pet fish."
    "Pet fish?!" the warden replied.
"Yes, sir. Every night I take these fish down to this beach and let them swim around for about a half-hour, When I whistle, they all come back, jump back into my buckets, and I take 'em home. We do this every night."
"That's a bunch of hooey," said the warden. "Fish can't do that!"
"No, really! says the man. "Here, I'll show you." And he releases the fish in the ocean.
"Well, I've GOT to see this!" the game warden replied.
The man and the warden stood and waited. After several minutes, the game warden turned to the man and said, "Well?"
    "Well, what?" the man asked.
"When are you going to call them back?" the game warden huffs.
"Call who back?" the man asked.
    "The FISH."
    "What fish?" :Roflmao:D

Welp, Rock Cod Season 2019 has come to a close for me. I did one final trip for the year before the closure occurs on January, 2020 (until March). There was a light breeze when I pulled into the parking lot at the landing. Small ripples danced across the water in the marina. We would end up with 30 anglers for the day. Not bad on a 65 foot sportboat. Tangles were fairly minimal even though the wind was blowing against the current which made the boat swing back and forth on the anchor. Sportboats are a fun place to people watch. I rarely engage in conversation when I fish unless I see a newbie in need of assistance or someone wants to chat about their latest fishing massacre. Fisherman are a funny bunch, always looking for recognition. Always wanting to outdo the next guy by catching a bigger fish, and then bragging on an on about it when they do.

We loaded up the boat and then headed out 10 miles to Rock Point. I'd fished here many times in the past, both on sportboats and on private boats. With the breeze came a chop so while it wasn't rough, it wasn't calm either. The fishing was tough. You had to fish a certain way (with live bait), which I do not care for, and pay close attention for bites. Those that did, were rewarded. I wanted to catch fish a different way (with a jig), so I stuck to that for a little while but it did not produce much so I went to using live bait and I caught a few. We fished several spots out in that deeper water (240') until we had enough of what we were looking for. Then, we moved in a bit shallower (180') to finish the day. This is what I was waiting for. We fished several spots in that area and continued to pick away. I was able to fish the jig more effectively and I started to produce with it. I ended up with at least a dozen assorted rockfish (no Red Snapper) and a Sheephead for my efforts with the jig and with the bait. I gave them all away to less fortunate anglers on board. I would have a kept a few Red Snapper if I had caught any. Those have very white, firm meat and they are delicious if eaten on the same day they are caught.

The ride home was long, as it always is. We passed under the take-off flight zone for LAX so it was entertaining to watch those enormous hunks of metal gaining altitude. We did see a pod of Pacific Bottlenose Dolphins which are a rare sight. Lots of sea birds, beautiful sunrise scenes (I shared something elsewhere here already), other porpoise pods, and some fellow anglers on other boats around us. We shared some bait with one of the sportboats from another landing. Having two sportboats get up close on the water is some of scary. I was on a trip once when two boats made contact while sharing bait/supplies. The contact separated a section of the railing from the boat that I was on. Yikes!

Pictured below are a Salmon Grouper, a Starry Rockfish, and two sea birds (a gull and an egret).
