Just curious, how'd that trail get so bad in the first place? Was it abandoned or in a closed area or something?

 

Yea he’s recovering from a broken collarbone He’s about 90 percent...
Can’t keep him away though

 

He's had a broken collar bone for what seems like 3 years now.

Looks like a true adventure ride once the ends are connected.

Thanks @kioti and thanks to the dedicated crew from MWBA, CORBA and OTBmbc. We are so pumped to be able to contribute in bringing back this section of trail.
It's been closed since the station fire in 2009
There are sections where the entire trail washed away from lack of vegetation, and then there are sections where all it needs is some brush trimming.
A contractor is going to have to access a couple of chasms we encountered, where the missing section of trail will have to be filled in and brought up to the original level.
When we are done, you will be able to ride the Gabrielino trail from Switzer's (or Red Box) and come out by JPL. Or if your last name is Lawson, then you ride from JPL and come out at Chantry flats
@burt is already planning on riding up this section, doing the Strawberry loop and coming back down, lollipop style

 

The ride from Chantry to JPL is the better direction, IMHO.

Awesome work MWBA gang. A mile of trail recovery in those parts is a huge accomplishment.Looks like some prime San Gabes sketchy & exposed singletrack.

 

I was going to ask if it was closed because of fire, but the vegetation's so lush! Is it still closed? Why's it been closed so long? And is it still impassable because of those chasms, or can they be HAB'd?

 

Yes, its still closed from below Switzers to JPL. A lot of work to do before we can get USFS approval to re open the trail.

More trail work today on the Gabrielino. The crew met at Switzers again and hiked/rode down to the work site. Still a lot of work to be done but we had a very productive day.
Spent all day rock armoring a washed out section and bringing the trail back up to the original level.

At the beginning of the day some of us rode down to where the tool cache was kept. Then we hiked back and distributed the tools to the crew. At the end of the day I had to hike back to retrieve my bike. Made for a rather long day.



Back at Switzers we enjoyed lunch courtesy of MWBA and Team Dream bicycling.
