Shoe covers are crap if you think that you will be doing any HAB. You will destroy them in a ride or 2.

Try duct tape on the vents, wool socks, or double up and do 2 pairs of socks. Last option is plastic baggies over your socks inside your shoes.

I agree with J, again. And I have the trashed covers to show for it. Best money is on a dedicated shoe for off road use.

I guess I'm lucky... The feet are the last things to get cold on me. Even in the 20s, I'm usually ok with heavy socks. Wool can't be beat! My hands, on the other hand, have had too many broken bones and cut fingers and hurt quickly in the cold.

Woolie Boolies are my go to for cold weather riding. I use Pearl Izumi X Alps as my winter shoe and Sidi Dominators as my 3 season shoe.

I have some Gore Tex Diadora boots for cold / winter rides. I used the boots for my last rain ride in 2016. They worked great. Feet were dry and toasty, but 8 hours in these things? I also have some neoprene Garneau shoe covers (road). For the 1-2-17 ride, I was wrestling with a pretty big mtn bike dilemma: (1) wear boots for a 6-8 hour ride, or (2) go out in my regular shoes and use my covers if I got cold. I went with option B. VERY glad that I did. The boots are heavy (and I was running very low tire pressure (21) for the drops, so climbing was going to be hard enough as it was) and I have 3,000 miles or so in those shoes and could wear them until the end of time and still be okay wearing them. I put the covers on at Four Corners. These are pretty high quality covers... they aren't ruined and it was a fairly high level ride. They are not "new looking" for sure! I think I would get four or five big ugly winter rides like the 1-2-17 ride out of these covers. I got them for under $20 at Performance, so a pretty good bang for buck ratio IMHO.

Trippy view from my office right now, the lower clouds are quickly moving sideways almost like a fast moving fog bank.

I read the Mammoth is looking at up to 20' of snow in the next 10 days (as of yesterday).

Do shoe covers wear out more quickly on SPD shoes? The full covers I've owned and used on flats took/are taking a merciless beating. Sugoi and Speci.

Layers rule over big single items when on the move.

I think that the gaps in fabric for the spd and for the rear traction create weakness and opportunity for tearing. I did a few tepees on Joplin that probs did the damage.

I did a winter road bike tour once with my regular Sidi's. They were worthless for cold weather, but I layered thick wool socks over them, followed by insulated shoe cover/booties over the socks (both with cleat cut-outs in the bottom). Toasty feet even bombing down Towne Pass (out of Death Valley) at 50+mph in near-freezing conditions. Got weird looks off the bike though, since those shoe covers were shiny silver ala Ziggy Stardust! Warm feet in frigid temps trumps all though, in my book.

A good winter riding shoe, to me, is one that'll stay warm and dry fording stream crossings (like on Maple Springs), but leave soles exposed for HAB's and rock-hopping. I'd also add a gaiter around the top to keep rain, river water and sweat from getting inside.

+1 for the gaiters. I have been wearing them lately on some of my regular rides just to keep the rocks and sand out of my shoes.
Outdoor Reseach makes good ones suitable for hiking.
I had a pair from REI-they broke before I left the parking lot!
Some of the trail running options look good too.

I was with you, Steve, until I got a new pair of biking shoes. My old shoes had a full covered toe box. These new shoes are completely vented. I always bike with thick cotton socks and for ten years have never had cold feet... until this year. Cold weather, vented shoes, and a long downhill at speed, and my feet were on their way to being frozen.

I think duct tape would have been all I needed, and I always keep a roll in my car. I never thought about it until it was too late :)

Full disclosure: Yea, we re-purposed them from the snow sports bin. For pure rain I prefer a rain pant and shoe covers. We have those little REI sand gaiters you broke...I think ours are broken, haha.
