Hehe...good conditions for escaping the family: dark

Hey, that wintry chill is gone, and my mind is going numb with the onset of normal conditions. Thankfully the good dirt is not gone :sneaky:

It appears we are now getting rain often enough that the trails will need more than a day or two to dry out. Looks like I will be getting some road miles in this year.

Aliso and Whiting open. Not exactly in your hood, but unexpected given the frequent and persistent rains. Ground is now super-saturated.

I talked to one of the rangers in O'Neill last year when it was quickly re-opened after a rain, and the Live Oak trail was a mud pit. He said they didn't physically check the trails before deciding to reopen... o_O

It's my understanding OC Parks wants their trails open as many days as possible. It's my feeling frequent users can get to know the trails and adjust their routes accordingly. For example, on questionably muddy days in Whiting I'd avoid climbing Mustard and stay on the Cactus side. Things typically dry out more quickly there.. especially Cactus, Whiting Road and Vulture View/Sage Scrub.

The Stars have aligned to keep me off the dirt the past few weeks. While I love the rain it is really coming at the wrong times for me. Beginning to think that my new light will be set for pavement rides when I can for the near future, just to keep my legs moving. I understand that I am at a point in my life where my time comes last but it is having an affect on my moral and happiness.

2017 not off to a great start for me, now excuse me while I grab some more TP for my bungho... I mean tears.

Luckily I have zero qualms about switching to the road bike as needed. Both GMR and San Gabriel Cyn to Crystal Lake are worthy climbs in their own right.

Bundle up and go for it. You may find it can be as much fun as the mtb.:geek:

That's my point. There is not much time between the rains so the ground is getting saturated. All of my go to trails the day after it rains are turning into go to trails 2-3 days after it rains.

Maybe there are some beat-up paved roads to ride when trails are unrideable? Dirt roads, which don't require hand tool maintenance, just the occasional blading? Got to be creative and feed the mountain bike beast, but not get run over by texters.

Take a 1 gal. zip loc bag and inside put a pair of gloves, something for your head and a dry shirt. Put that in your pack and use it when you get to the top. The misery getting there will be tempered by your relative comfort going down.

Most of my foul weather rides are 2-3 hours long to half day affairs. I make sure to be prepared for at least that long. If it's cold bring a little extra food because you'll be burning energy just trying to stay warm.

    Love this weather!
No bad days, just bad gear

Ive felt that in recent years, sometimes aliso and lcwp has reopened after the rains a day to soon. Ssome of the shady and more clay-ey places still too slick.

There is this phenomenon about Granite...it decomposes! ...and all the cobble and pebble and little gravel and large sand detritus allow water to permeate the trail matrix and get conveyed downslope, which is the direction we mountain cyclists typically go for half the distance or more. Ride the granite folks!

One of the best rides I have ever had was on a rainy day.
Early in my MTB life, we were going to meet my wife's boss, an avid rider, and ride near Chantry.
We wake up and it's raining good and I'm not happy (did I mention I wake up cranky? :whistling:).
She said he said rain or shine, so we drove up, with me still being a crank most of the way. It ended up being a perfect day.
Uncrowded, hero dirt decomposed granite, San Gabes wonderness. It changed my perspective permanently.
I really enjoy a battle against the weather now.

Ain't nothing like Chantry in the rain....just rode there this morning. Still damp! Streams running, sounds of flowing water, cascading down canyon.
