I can't keep up (haha, insert joke).

What are my options for a wide-range cassette that has larger than a 36t big ring? That will work with a SRAM XX long cage rear der (2011 vintage; no clutch)?

    TIA for your illuminations

To go bigger than a 36t cog on a ten speed cassette, you are gonn have to do one of the "add a cog" conversions.

    Wolftooth
    One Up
    Hope

There might be some obscure companies like Praxis and such that make a complete cassette, but most people just do the conversion.

I plan on the praxis 11-40. Supposedly no Rd adjustment needed

I got a sun race 11-40. Cheap and works great with SRAM chain and sram der. There's a big thread about these on mtbr

I did the Wolftooth for a few months before going ss, and it was nice... Does it shift silky smooth like the latest and greatest? Nope... But it shifted good enough for me. It was actually more finicky with the added smaller cog than the 42. The 42 went in and out nicely... That was with an XT derailleur and a goat link.

That's good to know, I have been considering this. So would you recommend it as a 2x10, or you think there is better? I'm not going to go 1X...

new isn't always better... 1 x 11 is great, less weight, less chain rattle, simpler shifting etc but the 2 x 10 at times could be faster shifting... and the wider range comes in handy on a long cross country ride...I do miss the top speed acceleration of the the 2 x 10...

The couple of bikes I have ridden and worked on that had the "add a cog" on them felt like crap....sorry, but even set up properly, it wasn't even close to the way the stock cassette felt. The guy that owns them keeps saying that it feels great, but I couldn't deal with it.

    Good thoughts and recos, guys.

24 x 11-36 sounds like it will work just fine for my needs. Poor shifting is kind of a deal breaker once acclimated to silky systems.

What I really need is a direct-mount spiderless double chainring so I can "shift" manually for climbs or flats/DH. 22/36 would be dreamy. N/W prolly asking too much. You guys heard of that silliness for GX mount? I see e13 has them for TRS series mount.

Wife has that set up, but not spiderless or N/W. Pretty cool. What would ya call it? Dingle-by?

I think you would really like a stock 2 x 10 setup compared to the 3 x 10 you have now. It's a night and day difference... There are just way too many nooks and crannies and moving parts with 3 x 10. It may work, but damn, that's a lot of stuff to cart around!

2x introduces different set of parameters as the chain length requirements are different. With the 1x, a medium cage is recommended.

You are a beast, bite the 1x bullet man! :Roflmao

I found the same thing... replacing the Wolftooth 16t with a Shimano one made a big difference.

Gotta admit. My 3x works perfect and has since day one. BUT! I would like to shed a chainring and not lose any range if anything "gain" a little on the low end.

EDIT: I find myself most of the time in my Mid Ring "32" and bouncing between my Large (36) Cog and next lower Cog.

You will find that you will adapt to the 2x gearing....or even a 1x system. Just take the leap of faith man. You will be surprised at how strong you really are.

Thanks for that, Mikie...single speed sure does expose any weaknesses, tho. Maddest of props to the guys who rock it like gears.

I think I'm gonna stick with my 11-36 ten speed cassette, matched with my 34 chainring up front. I can climb Monroe TT with it; I can get to Mt Baldy Village with it; I can get to both the golf ball and Sierra Peak with it. Not sure yet about Pleasants Peak. Someone has to take me there. :whistling:

What I can't do is epics with tons of tres-repetitive short steeps. I'll have to work on that.

Which derailleur and cog set, btw? I using the XT and Zee derailleurs with the One-Up Rad and Rad'r cages respectively, and it returns the shifting pretty damn close to stock levels, much better than the goat link ever could. Sram on the otherhand is pretty good, since the upper pulley is offset already.
