I love grilling. For 15 years I lived in our house with a crappy grill. The time finally came for us to replace the decking around our pool, so I had them demo out the old small brick grill, and stub off utilities where I was going to build my new grill.

First... a little work in Sketchup to plan all my framing and the dimensions of the finished product:

The utilities included gas, electrical, water, and drain:

Metal framing to avoid rot and insect damage:

Framing complete. My wife wanted the curved front which complicated things tremendously, but ultimately looks awesome:

    Stucco and tile work:

Hrm. Well I decided I wanted to go with REAL STONE on the front and sides to match the stone in our pool. This was a BIG JOB... probably 40 man hours of just stone work.

Install bar countertop. Can't see it in the photo, but I have LED strip lighting under the bar on both sides:

Install appliances, and Voila! Finis! Just needed to buy four bar stools. I also have a large cutting board that fits over the burner to the right of the grill. I wanted a big burner to boil seafood or fry turkeys.

Originally I was going to build a shade cover, but my wife thought it looked too heavy. Nice thing about the umbrella is that it's really easy to replace, and I can string up party lights to give some soft general lighting all around the grill/bar area.

Do it yourself and you save a ton. The whole island (without the appliances or the stainless inserts) cost me a total of $3K - and that's only because I used real stone on the front and expensive stone tile.

I mean for the grill and sink fixtures, not the framing. Looks stainless, but I heard aluminized is less expensive, yet stronger. Wondering if it's the new school choice yet, being interested in materials and all, yet not seeing them gain popularity until decades after their introduction.

:thumbsup:As a General Contractor of many years, that is a great job well done!
Great Idea as well in choosing to frame with metal studs. Makes totally good sense.
    Great craftsmanship.

I like my steaks medium rare thank you!

Stainless appliances. The grill and power burner are name-brand, but the rest of the stainless are made independently by a company in Arizona. I really like their insulated cooler - deep enough to stand beer bottles in upright, with a drain so when I am done entertaining I just pull the plug and the ice melts and drains away....

    cooler.jpg

Thanks! I have a sear burner on the grill, so I always sear nice 45 degree grill marks on my steaks, and then finish them over the general burners turned low. Prime New York Strip steaks from CostCo... medium rare... mmmmmmmmm.....

And it looks awesome. Professional quality through and through, and I'm with everyone else asking when the breaking-in party is going to happen.

That's part of the problem. Although I have the technical ability, I just don't have the time to build it. Since I would have to build it on weekends, I wouldn't be able to ride my bike for a few months. That would suck.

Besides, though I do love grilling, I just don't do it that often. The science has come down against it; I'm old enough that I don't want to be probed every five years (rather stretch it to ten); and I'm becoming more and more willing to pay someone else for the grunt work.

I get - 100% - the satisfaction that comes from doing it yourself. I redid both my front and rear yards, a bathroom, and my kitchen. It was a lot of work, and I was much younger and much more gung-ho (read: tightwad) for that stuff then. :gag:

I am in awe of your workmanship and ability. I just don't have that in me anymore.

You have to love working with your hands, or I wouldn't recommend it. That said, nothing in this project was physically taxing. That's where I draw the line today. Years ago I dug out a 5' deep koi pond, carried all the materials, mixed all the concrete with a drum mixer, poured the slab, built the walls... and when I was done I said "well I'm glad I can scratch THAT off my bucket list!" Never again :)
