Zoomed in it shows he was using an old fashioned toe cage with straps. o_O I'll second the "not a regular rider".

He was instinctively trying to twist out of clipless pedals, but forgot he was wearing mall shoes stuck into toe clips on a decrepit Trek hybrid. Coulda happened to anyone.

    Well.......update time.

Orthopedic visit yesterday. Nearing 5 months since surgery.

Yes, I have been riding since early June.

The break is no longer visible in the X-ray. I'm no longer on any restrictions. Short of a heavy traumatic impact, I'm good to go.

Still doing PT. Still have some limited ROM. Still lacking strength. Can't pull up on the bars to manual over anything.....it's getting better, but I'm still just plowing through a lot of stuff.

Have a few mental hurdles to overcome as well. Fast sweeping left hand turns are fine. Fast sweeping right hand turns still have me with a bit of PTSD. Not leaning the bike as much as I should. Knowing the bone is healed will help with this...I hope.

DH speeds are getting back to normal. Still haven't ventured out to some of the more technical trails....hopefully in the next few weeks.

I'm glad you mention the mental reluctance, that's real!
I had the same thing for a while after my dirt nap a few years ago.
Glad the physical side is coming along!!!

Good to hear. You definitely had an extensive injury. When I fell on my left side in WW on ricky bobby,I still have a pesky biceps tendonitis pain!? That was on Memorial day! I didn't have a fracture....that I know of:whistling:

J mentions the mental recovery part of post crash... I'm still not recovered from my last surgery mentally. Physically back to 90 percent but I still can't commit on steep rock garden drops anymore...
Heck I did not even know grasshopper had a rocky steep section b/c I would fly thru it in the past but now, I see it and say no thanks, taking the switchback... its all in my head... T n A.. no thanks like forever! well maybe I'll try it next week....
the main problem is that if I'm out for 6 months again then work, family, etc so messed up...

Agree, not worth getting hurt. You can't prevent everything and I know I've had falls when I least expected it. Sometimes when I'm "not feeling it" I'll just walk it, especially if it's a high penalty for failure.

Yeah, if that had been me I would never say anything. I have seen too many lawsuits based on "improperly" moving someone after an accident. I have seen these same posts on FB, and IMO they are trying way to hard to give thanks.

I hope I am wrong about that, but that's what it feels to me.

The interesting thing about my serious crashes is that none of them came on a section that was challenging. It wasn't a matter of "oh, I should have walked that" it was "SLAM - you're down" - on a routine stretch of trail.

But like others have said, I am no longer willing to push the limits that I was prior to my May 2020 helicopter ride. The recovery from that followed very closely by the recovery from my Jan 2022 back surgery (about 16 months after recovering from prior May accident) made me not want to need medical intervention for a while. Frankly - the thing that worries me the most is the professional and personal embarrassment of getting hurt again, along with the down time.

I lost the best climber I know. Doing a eh rock garden in Hurricane. Bang OTB and that was it. He even had an EMT in his pack of riders. 90 minutes to Medivac to St George. doubt he knew he was flying. RIP. Be careful out there boys
Happy trails to you, till we meet again.

The best F1 driver of all time cracked his head on a rock whilst skiing and is now a vegetable.

Out for at least 6 weeks. Went down on hawk at oaks. OTB, and hit my jaw on impact luckily my right wrist took the brunt of it. Could have been worst on that rocky , fast chute. Fractured my wrist in the process.

wife says I should ride more age appropriate trails. Bummer.

That sucks. :( Hawk has some parts I def wouldn't want to crash on. Now I feel lucky getting out of there the other day with just a flat tire.

    Healing vibes.

Get yer own thread....this one is already taken..... :Roflmao

J/K......that really sucks. Trails are so dry and blown out right now....it doesn't take much to have the carpet pulled out from underneath you.

Hawk is a fast trail.....if you let off the brakes.

Jaw or wrist.....tough call. Wrist might be the better of the two. Just gonna let it heal on its' own? My wife is still recovering from a wrist fracture from Labor Day weekend. Bone is healed, but the ROM and stregnth is limited.

And we ride the way we ride......age is of no concern.

    Heal up.

My bad… should have made sure this wasn’t a general man down thread. After 7 pages I figured it was a free for all.

hope your wife makes a full recovery soon.
