Emerald Bay area is on fire.

 

Yes, I'm watching this live on the news.

 

I just broke the news to my daughter that school is closed. She hooted, but then showed concern for others. Love her.

Fingers crossed for the maximum protection of life and property. The wind is pretty bad.

From a mt biking perspective, the fire is at the edge of El Moro /Crystal Cove bordering Laguna Coast Wilderness Park (LCWP).

From a homes perspective, it's Irvine Cove and Emerald Bay - some of the most expensive property in the world.

 

It’s burning down near the end of the Emerald Cyn Trail.

From the looks of the perimeter, my money is on an arsonist or cig smoker up on Moro Ridge fireroad

Fire is contained - crews onsite mopping up. No structures burned.

 

latest news says 145 acres and 5% contained, but not spreading rapidly. I no longer see any smoke from my home by lag cyclery , and a friend who loves near E Bay doesnt either

Also saw it this morning on TV news, at 6am. Such a huge BUMMER!!!! Damn. Was gonna ride El Moro - LCWP this weekend.

Haven’t checked back. Has it effected any of the El Moro or Laguna Coast Wilderness Park trails?

 

According to Laguna Canyon Foundation Instagram - LWCP is currently closed due to fire.
It must've flared up mid AM after I watched it morning news where they said it was limited to approx 5 acres and had been contained

 

judging by the morning news overhead vid even at sunrrise was well more than 5 acres, and the last image of the perimeter I saw seemed to match the last acreage number of 145 acres. Unless it got bigger than that, which i doubt because no smoke was even visible from here after 11 am, Looks like an illegal trail into emerald canyon was burned but none of the legal singletracks unless it reached bottom of emerald canyon trail. Looks like they could easily close off this area by closing emerald canyon trail at the bottom of Old Emerald and closing off BFI and Moro Ridge southwest of East cutacross in El Moro

 

As expected LCWP site still says closed, but I did not see a closure notice on CC's site. Does anybody know?

Rode Aliso today. Was a complete zoo. I assume because of the trail closures at CC and LCWP. Everything was open.

 

I wondered how Aliso was, as Oaks wasn’t bad in the late morning/early afternoon.

 

I rode a little bit of LCWP today. Just be careful. The fire roads are a bit different after the actual fire trucks and dozers came through.

 

Did any singletrack get bulldozed that you saw?

 

No AFAISaw but I suspect lower Emerald canyon is probably a fire road.. but I did not go down it.

 

Ugh. Such a fun singletrack too.

Me too. Was there from 7:30-9:30am. A little more crowded than normal, but not bad. A larger increase in hikers than MTBrs.

So did the fire start at one of the campgrounds on Moro Ridge?

 

When I asked yesterday, the cause was still under investigation... Of course that was from a random CC Employee
