My rear Maxxis DHR II 29x2.4 tire has about 6 or 700 miles on it. The tread is thrashed enough for the bike to get squirrelly when I enter turns too hot.

    What would you do?
    1. Replace the tire; or
    2. Slow down.

You should change tires like underwear. They should not last 6 years. 5 maybe.

    Bonty SE4

I liked it better on Joplin than the Minion, and I'm loving it on all the loose stuff up here in Canadia. Some crazy guy on the forum recommends Bontys all the time. I did have the Minion on when we went up the Toll Road, but I was dizzy from forcing it to go uphill for so long and thought @rossage might need to give me oxygen at the top.

I am Bonty curious. I had XR4 Team Issue on my Knolly a few years back, but I don't recall being either impressed or disappointed. Some say a product is great when it disappears from view and you don't think about it. That makes sense.

I say get some semi slicks.....that way you don't have to wait 6 years for them to get drifty and slippy....they'll be like that right out of the box.

    2.4 you say.....

    Bonty SE4 or Maxxis Aggressor

When my rear SE4 wears out....I may swap the front SE4 onto the back and give the SE5 a go up front.

The XR3 from mama’s bike lasted 6 years due to mellow rides and partial abandonment in the garage. The Minion is on the SquiggleBug and is maybe 16 months old. I have an SE4 ready to deploy. Maybe I’ll mount that for summer and hold onto the Minion to put back on when moisture can help a worn tire track better.

 Yesterday someone I pulled up next to as we waited for an equestrian to pass looked at the SquiggleBug and said she is the first one he’s seen in the wild. He peeked a few more times before taking off up the hill.

Those are the same generation I run on the rear of my 26ers. They came stock on my 2013 Trek Slash, but I didn’t like them on the front. One thing I noticed for sure is the additional volume a Bontrager provides compared to the “same size” tire of other brands. For the rear, the XR4 was great for me. I hadn’t ridden enough to make it onto the current generation until now.

I’m torn between the improved rolling efficiency and reduced traction. It still corners well, but it slides out when I hit the brakes on the loose over hardpack, and it’s only gonna get worse through summer. I had 2 close calls yesterday, but one of which ended up pretty trick breh as I skidded the rear right-left-right into a hard left supported by a berm. Fun but unnerving too.

Take it from me, slightly improved rolling efficiency doesn't mean squat. No offense, but you are not the fastest climber (about the same as me) and a more worn tire isn't going to change that. However, a broken clavicle will definitely impact your riding schedule and the "good will" wife points we all need to continue riding. Get the damn tire!

reinforced version with sticky rubber. Feels equivalent to maxxis maxxgrip. Casing 2.45, widest knobs 2.55. $55, compared to $90+ for dhf maxxgrip dh. Profile looks great, haven’t hit trail yet.
Also put CST BFT 2.4 on the back a couple of weeks ago , $45, since dhr 2 dc is over $70 now everywhere. I used this tire back in the 26” era but didn’t remember if I liked it or not
    upload_2021-11-20_7-45-44.jpeg
The wideish central channel is kind of odd, but so far so good on the trail. Braking traction seems not quite as good as dhr
Side note: am I the only one in the world not super impressed with the maxxis assegai? Just doesn’t seem as grippy as dhf/dhf clones

Some feedback after a month. The Delium delivers-on a grip/price ratio. Compared to DHF, rolls just as good, similar casing, rubber (softer version) seems similar to Maxxgrip, slightly better braking, quite grippy in the steeps But the DHF edges it out on cornering/side grip. Its not quite as square as the DHF, thats my gripe with the Versatile, side knobs should be a little taller, and a little "longer" from front to back with a little less space in between. but at half the price, Ill keep running it! It may be a little more suited to softer dirt than the dhf, but its not squirmy at all on firm surfaces. Its very similar to Specialized Butcher.
I hope Delium comes out with a DHR 2 copy :) The CST BFT...kinda sucks. That wide central channel leads to some wierd stuff when braking.

Thought I’d try some of the new continental rubber for this extremely dry loose sketchy SoCal summer

Maybe 2.6 kryptotal rear for the front would have been the more sensible choice. Oh well
Report back after trail test. I’m sure grippy as hell but slow rolling and overkill

Rachel Atherton (and family) has been raving about the new Conti tires on her Instagram. She's paid to, I'm sure, but she's getting freaking fast again and probably wouldn't run a sketchy tire...

My DHR and DHF are getting worn out already on the Beast. Looking to get something that rolls better and doesn't feel like I have a boulder tied to the bike when climbing. Not alot of hero dirt up here in the Summer, just the normal hard pack with loose stuff all over.
