Hmmmm, trying to watch the replay of the mens DH final, but it seems to be unavailable, although the Redbull website says "replay available."

So why does the USA suck at XC racing? We invented it!

My theory: We are a nation of hedonists. XC is too hard and not fun enough. We will probably excel at e-bike racing though!

Simple, we just don't have the high altitude mountains like they do everywhere else. Look at racers that do well.....France, Swiss.

And our women do well....the men, not sure what they are doing.

The Men, they're probably all distracted looking at the "where are all the mtb hotties" thread but live and in person. Aka: Hot chick's on bikes make legs go soft.

Funny you should mention altitude. When the Grundig World Cup and Champs events were mostly in CO (Vail, Durango, Winter Park, etc) and other high altitude places like Mammoth, the Euros complained that they couldn't compete at such high altitudes. That was the beginning of the end for US XC - most events got moved to Europe. The Alps are considerably lower in altitude than the aforementioned venues.

Top US woman today was what, 16th (just behind the first Mexican woman)? Of course, I didn't see Kate Courtney on the list, so perhaps she didn't race.

So I'm still going with Americans are too lazy to concentrate on XC. Plus, the US doesn't really pay much attention to European sports in general (ski racing, cycling, kayaking, squirrel suit flying, Formula 1, World Wars etc...)

Kate is out until the Olympics with a broken bone in her forearm. She's been training on the road... And she got engaged!

Jolanda Neff had a crash in the 4th lap which resulted in a broken hand. She was still able to finish in 4th place.

I don't follow it closely, but this paragraph caught my eye.

    https://www.cyclingnews.com/races/uci-mtb-world-cup-xco-leogang-2021/elite-women-xco/results/

The course suited Lecomte perfectly as a climber, and she took the lead before the end of the start loop and the first of five laps, never to relinquish it. Incredibly, she has led every lap of every World Cup race this season. She steadily powered away from the rest of the field to a gap of over two minutes, before slowing slightly on the last lap.

I'm hoping that when they get into some of the more technical courses, it'll level the field....but from the sounds of it, she's can handle herself just fine on the descents as well.

I watched a lot of the replay... The announcers were talking about gear ratios, and how the riders would all be in their easiest combo on some of the steeper climbs. She wasn't. It's hard to see, but her chain wasn't at the top of the cassette in the sections that every other rider was in the granny.

I call off season single speed training... :Roflmao

It makes my heart happy to see how much mt biking has been put into XC racing! Rock gardens, drops, root tangles and yes, even bike-park jumps. World Champ Schurter showing how you do flat pedal moves on the balls of your feet - in Lycra! Without a visor!

On a spindly little bike with bald tires!

With that said....the Women's Race on Sunday was really good. Glad to see someone else win....Lacomte is human after all.

The Men's race was tight the whole way....it is scary how fast these guys are getting.

Looks like he had to adjust his saddle. Maybe his dropper post was stuck!

Yes - dropper posts in XC racing. The guys who shave grams with titanium bolts and ultra-light water are now willing to add nearly a pound to their bikes with a dropper post. The courses are getting good!
