Must be nice living and riding near the beach with it's cool on shore breezes and marine layer influence.

I wish we had that problem here in Southern Canada.

No. I think the bulk of OC live in tract housing on cul-de-sacs with look-alike houses. Some of them massive, some of them modest. Some behind gates/guards, some not.

That said, there are tons of people in the OC who live in cramped apartments or trailer homes as well - as there are everywhere. And let's not forget the recent uptick in multi-family, 5 story housing popping up in Irvine and points south. "Close to the beach and close to wilderness parks perfect for hiking and biking. Great schools!" - heavily advertised in countries on the other side of the Pacific Ocean...

Tomorrow, Mutha’s Day: Cadillac to the Luge, meet @ bottom of Cad at 6am. Some walking involved.

The full Mutha continues on Harding-Joplin-SOT. I’ll have my hands full but won’t tell anyone who likes to suffer or watch someone suffer to stay away.

Harding-Joplin laps tomorrow. Anyone wants to hook up for one or two, I'm game.

Starting at the Wash on Trabuco Cyn Rd about 5:30 or meet near Cook's. I'll bypass the Luge until the end to minimize the paved miles and people. First time through Old Camp I'll refill water. Ping me here if you wanna meet, but I'll be offline in the evening until just before the ride starts. The only time I'm shooting for is a good ol' time with feet on the pedals.

I wanna ride Marshall in a few hours to see the eclipse, but the damn hairy spiders are freaking me out. @Luis said he saw a few after sunset today, and it only gets worse before the sun rises again. I wish someone else would go up there and knock them off the trail first.

Edit: yea no...this never happened. I set the alarm, woke up at 3 to pee, and fell back asleep in 10 seconds.

I had plans to meet @Im Livin the Dream at Gooseberry Mesa or Bearclaw Poppy on Friday, but I just sent him the following message, which is also directed at everyone in case you have input, which is welcome.

    Dream,

I have to cancel on Friday. Sorry! It turns out if I take the car for the day, mother-in-law wouldn’t be able to make the Lake Powell day trip with the rest of the group because she won’t fit with the rest of the caravan. I would be super douchey if I went riding with the rig since the entire trip to the Southwest is meant to scatter grandmother-in-law and grandfather-in-law ashes at the Kaibab Forest.

My alternative is an MTB ride somewhere between Kanab and Lake Powell (family would drop me off somewhere along the way and pick me up at end of day; otherwise, I was thinking of taking the road bike and riding the 89 from Kanab to Lake Powell and meeting them there for a shuttle ride back to the hotel.

Again, I’m sorry I’m flaking on you, but yea…here we are.
Any intel you have on rides between Kanab and Lake Powell would be appreciated. Otherwise, lemme know what you think about my idea to ride tarmac along the 89. Thanks Dream.

That’s where the AZT finishes. So you can out-back that to the south. As I look at Trailforks I see a black trail that crosses it. The descent back to the end of the trail is a brake burner. Beautiful scenery, fun riding on the AZT.

The TH is a little off the highway, no bad roads. The TH itself is cool with ramadas and picnic benches, etc.

If you've never done the front range trails, they might put a smile on your face. Where Strawberry and the Gab have more XC sections, the front range is full on enduro from top to bottom... Right up your alley.

Only a 10 minute spin from where you were at Red Box yesterday...

I'd have to consult the wife, but it's probably doable... I was thinking the next version should be a Strawberry + The Front Range... If my memory serves me, that nets out to something like 27 miles and 4000 feet.

I am in the odd situation where there are so many places I love to ride, that even though I try to tell myself to branch out more, I don't out of fear I will be disappointed. There is just so much good riding down here in SoCal that you can get spoiled. Sometimes you just have to work for it. These trails are one of those cases where I was afraid I would be let down, but I wasn't. Just beautiful trails (once you got passed the crowd, small penalty), that were challenging both up and down, but you spent more time focused on how beautiful it was that you could forget the pain for minutes at a time :p
