I didn't want to distract from Rossage's thread. That is the real deal.

I will need you nice folks to keep up the smack talk, derailments and general good ribbing that this site provides. I'm having Total Knee Replacement surgery in the morning and look forward to stopping in a LOT now that I'll have some serious free time on my hands.

The Dr. is a fellow cyclist and knee specialist and came with several recommendations from other cyclists. I'm hoping to be back on the Salsa Cutthroat in about 4 - 6 weeks for short rides around the block. I've had enough surgeries to feel 100% comfortable with what is ahead in terms of pain and rehab.

Multiple-day backpacking RR's are more than welcome too. Photos of top flight IPA's would be cruel, but motivational to heal up & shed the meds. I'll do my best for a photo op!

Best of luck! 4-6 weeks will go by fast. Take the time to do things you normally wouldn't have time for when you're always out riding.

You're definitely going into it with the right mindset. Positive vibes being sent your way!
I'm surprised your Dr. didn't okay an occasional IPA to ease recovery.

@OTHRider my wife has had two...one in June 2019, and the other in June 2020. The first one was the one with the most damage, and she was an outlier. Took longer than everyone thought. The one this year, though, she breezed right through just a bit behind the norm.

If you do the PT religiously, and every day, you'll be back up to snuff in no time. 6 weeks is realistic, but be careful.

EDIT: She didn't do it totally religiously, and so paid the price. But not too badly.

Right on man! That's a big operation. But the recovery is amazing. We gotta keep telling my MIL to slow down with her new knee.

My Mom needed hip replacement for 10-15 years but kept putting it off because she was afraid to go under general anesthesia. She finally relented at about age 75 but then gave up on the daily walking PT when she wasn't getting better "fast enough". She's ridiculously hard headed at times. Once she gave up, it went DH even faster and now she's worse than ever....and just as hard headed.

    Whoa!
Once you are awake and alert. Share the reasons why the replacement. I have a right knee that "could" be a candidate and I'm scared to pull the trigger. Some say wait until the last possible moment.

Wishing you an amazing replacement and a fast healthy recovery to be back on the bike in beast mode!
Looking forward to hearing from you!

Oh!! First, good luck and hoping for the best outcome! Second, I want to hear all the details - particularly with recovery and rehab!

My wife is an ex-figure skater and she's going to have both knees replaced in the spring. FWIW my mom had one knee replaced and her only comment was that she wished she had done it years earlier.

As far as the motivational ride reports go... I had to road bike it today because all my trails are closed due to rain! :(

    Successful!

I had to read 6 pages of Ross' conquest before I could enter my stuff

I have tried to stay in shape my whole life. The looks on the faces of the medical personnel when I tell them I take no prescription meds (before this), no diabetes, or HBP, is classic. I had the same look at each step "You mean you only take supplements?"

Share the reasons why the replacement - Bad genetics and getting injured way back when they didn't do knee surgeries on youngsters. I've got entries in my old running journals about "how sore my knees are". Bone on Bone officially since '02 but healthy enough to still run & ski. Things went slowly downhill and in '14 I took up MTB which bought me another decade of tolerance. When my knee brace finally stopped working, I started the process. It took about three years to get my life in order (sold my business, got a regular job with awesome insurance, etc.), picked out a surgeon from fellow cyclists' recommendations and started on PRE-OP exercises (best thing to do besides losing weight).

I've got a healthy dose of Engineer Genes flowing in my blood so I naturally dove in and researched PRE and POST surgery nightly. I'm glad I did.

Needless to say, I was out of the hospital after 11 hours (7 hours after surgery) and spent the night in my own bed. Walking with the supplied walker was almost too easy. I have absolutely NO PAIN in my joint but plenty of angry muscles, tendons, skin layers etc. to make up for it.

I have to go and walk up and down the street now, I'll add some details later. Thank you all for the well wishes!

@OTHRider nice to read of the successful surgery. Best of luck on the PT, it may very well be the most crucial part.
