I’ll be an early adopter. TF is the best app of its kind IMO, and I use it to plan and nav, so I don’t bat an eye at that price. I’m happy to contribute to see it improve.

That's ok....I usually only use it when I am on the trail, so local works when I need it.

The $$ doesn't bother me but I wish they had an early adopter "one time buy in" that was good forever....kind of like I could have paid $499 for a lifetime subscription to XM radio. I regret not doing that.

Local means your most ridden area. They’ll let you change it once via request. Local doesn’t mean where your phone gps is at the time you’re using the app.

$18/year doesn’t seem bad at all. I happily spend almost that much on paper maps whenever I go somewhere new. Of course, I won’t be paying for Trailforks, as I have this paper map already...

I have learned you can’t live without Trailforks!
It’s a great App, and one I would take any day of the week over STRAVA.

But can your paper map tell you exactly where you are on the map when you are lost?
Okay, say you forgot your compass, and it’s raining, and your left eye is poked out, and....

I wonder how the subscription will relate to trail updates though.

If people don't use the service because they don't want to pay, will the info stay as up to date?

Or less likely to have new trails added?

I had added some trails and trail descriptions in Covina area.. Marshall canyon... Etc... If I had to pay... I probably wouldn't have....

    If...
I read the article correctly you can upload any ride anywhere you ride and be able to see those rides. You just won’t have access to the mapping system outside your Chosen free space.
I think the early adopter thingy is a pretty sweet deal. Like mentioned I spend way more on beer annually and would even sacrifice some beer and let @Voodoo Tom pay for it in exchange for a Trailforks subscription.:geek:

Trailforks...facilitating what ya’ll call “inside people” to wander outside and make it back inside almost every time. Everyone is an inside person these days. Piss off if you think you deserve the open space more than your neighbor does. Everyone encroaches.

    Reading through again..
All maps will still be available through the website (for non subscribers)
Just greyed out in the app.

Anyway, I'll probably be jumping onboard. Very interested to see where they go,
If I could get my rides to record right in the app it would be even better.

Next time you go for a ride hit the little yellow triangle at center top of the screen, and see what happens.

A lot of people seem to be reacting before they bother to read or understand what TF is doing. So yeah, reading through again not a bad idea.

You mean like 50% off the fee for life, for early adoptors? One time lifetime fees ain't gonna happen anymore. I bet XM radio regrets offering that even more than you regret not taking them up on it.

I don't mind paying for TF... i do like their app when out on rides in new areas.

I just tried to use their route planner and that is horrible. You have to "draw" a route... is there another way to create a route by clicking on a trail and have the line follow the trail? Its probably user error on my part but if this is how the route planner is, i wont be signing up most likely.

I kinda like their platform but NOONE uses MTbprject and therefore most trail info is not up to date and is missing a lot of trails, especially the backcountry trails that an app like TF comes most on handy.
Keep messing with it, you actually have 4 options of mapping out your route. I have used the route builder quite a lot. Strava also has a route builder feature now too.

    I've tried it...
It showed a straight line from JPL to the brown saddle and back.

I think it was something to do with app permissions, but haven't tried it again since I changed location setting

Yes, I meant a ONE time LIFETIME fee. I use TF every trip out of state and even used it to find new trails while hiking on my last trip to Durango so I'll gladly pay the $17.99 per year.

That's the one I reach for... Especially after my Garmin became useless in the Oregon fog and the iPhone with MTB Project saved my bacon at an unmarked intersection. In the rain. Alone. No visibility. Freezing temps. And a bear. :inlove: I had a paper map with me, but never had to pull it out with MTB Project.

Am I the only one who's never used Trailforks?

The early adopter fee is a bargain in my book. It's less than $2 a month. Seriously people are complaining about it.:bang: On trail I refer to TF WAY MORE than I do Strava.

That was a rouse. The lifetime subscription was for the life of the radio unit, not the individual. So if you got a new car, wanted better technology, or lasted until Sirius bricked that unit. Someone out there may be taking that box from home to car still, but I highly doubt it. I was once one of them, but just paying an annual sub now, so I can hang on to the nostalgia of Howard Stern as he puts out some of the worst shows in his career.

Sounds like app permission. I had all my permissions change on my phone one day, and TF started doing what you describe. Change it back to allow location all the time, and it will work. I don't think TF is selling your location data so it should be safe.

@Faust29 give TF a try. The basic functionality is similar to MTB project but I find it easier to use. MTBP focuses too much on routes for my liking and if you're not doing the same route as what MTBP is suggesting it's a pain to get info on individual trail segments. Much easier on TF in my experience.

There are some areas where TF is much more up to date and some areas where MTBP is more up to date - both are user generated so it depends which app active locals tend to use more. I've been surprised what was included or omitted in each app a bunch of times. If you're in a new area it's worth looking at both. But I use TF far more.
