FWIW... today DOW posts biggest one-day percent gain since 1933...

Also, they have the highest population density, and many rely on public transportation. Imagine one person with a dry cough in a subway car...

LA is much more scattered, and a much higher percentage rely on autos for daily transportation.

Well... I thought I was part of the solution, but maybe I was part of the problem? Apparently my idea to "go visit Joshua Tree" was not as creative as I thought. The National Parks are shutting down... because they can't contain the flood of visitors:

I just watched Gavin Newsome's latest press conference. Someone asked him if California will "open" in April. He babbled for 5 minutes and then basically said no chance.

I know so many people who are out of work right now it is crazy. It will be interesting to see how things play out ... a massive amount of young people out of work with no way to pay bills for an extended period of time is a scary thought. At some point they will start getting very angry.

Man I really wanted to be out of this Californian ticking time bomb by now but it just hasn’t worked out that way. Now I’m afraid of getting stuck when the real estate market crashes along with everything else!

The pandemic is now effecting communications services.

My TV picture has pixelating and freezing up for the past few weeks and now my other TV which is wireless is no longer getting a signal. My internet has also been wonky for a few weeks. AT&T is not answering calls due to the COVID-19. I guess they have less staff on duty.

Looking at its website I don't see that Joshua Tree has closed yet. But you're right, we would be far from the only ones who would have the idea to go there. I'm sure it will close soon as well especially if the crowds don't behave.

All trails on City property in San Diego were shut down yesterday. A few others have followed and more today. I went and rode Iron Mtn after work today. When I got back to the bottom there was a closed sign at the trailhead, so that will be the last Iron Mtn ride for a while. Each closure is going to push people to the next area that isn't closed. Eventually I'm afraid they will all fall like dominos. Unfortunately bikes seem to be disproportionately affected. We can easily get away from crowds, and when pedaling it is very easy to stay more than six feet away from other riders. Despite being a small % of visitors at many areas we are subject to the same closure caused mostly by the hoardes of hikers.

It's very frustrating. I'm also disappointed land managers haven't tried to take a more hands on approach to managing people, similar to what is being done at many stores. Surely there are plenty of people with time on their hands who could volunteer at trailheads to monitor, educate and report issues. By simply closing trails we are losing a great opportunity to educate people. Instead, they are just going to go to the next place and repeat the same bone-headed behavior.

They implore us not to stock up, but then urge us to stay inside; there are scores of people out of work so they close recreational areas (a necessary decision because individuals wouldn't adhere to separation). I agree, powder keg.

Agreed... I liked the two prong approach. She was able to weave her own circumstances into the larger picture. One of the few athletes I follow- mostly because her work ethic is off the chart, and she still smiles when things hurt.

One more thing. Though it is difficult to think this far ahead, trust me that you will want to be heavily invested in the stock market in 2021, when all these companies post their year-over-year growth numbers from 2020.

You'll want to think about buying in soon while the markets are still low and/or uncertain. It is expectation of recovery that will drive prices higher. If you wait until 2021 you will miss much of the price rebound. Just look at how the markets have responded to stimulus talk the last couple days.

Rode over to the local regional park this morning. After doing my qigong routine, thought I'd assess trail closure and social distancing compliance (purely as a public service).

    Trail closure compliance: None

    Social Distancing compliance: None

Groups of primates huddled up around the cell phone chattering away in foreign languages: Common, same as always

Final note, there was a Deputy Sheriff in an SUV rolling slowly across the grass maybe 10 yds from a major trailhead entrance to the hills trail system, with a fairly steady stream of hikers bunched up in groups heading right on past him and nothing, not even a look from either the deputy or the hikers. Apparently not a priority yet.

I rode through Irvine Park yesterday on a leisurely outing, and it was pretty empty except near the equestrian section. The few groups that I encountered practiced no social distancing. Doesn't bode well since that is something easy and inexpensive (free) and people won't comply.

They could be making observations about compliance which would be reported back to inform upcoming policymaker decisions. I believe most police have been told to minimize interactions with the public. Though they could blast them over their loudspeaker.

Heard a helicoptor somewhere nearby last night yelling at someone over loudspeaker that such and such was closed and move along. Lots of police presence here near the beach.

Feel like I've been flirting with this for the last week.... Achey and felt hot (but no fever) last Thursday, Friday felt better but went for a bike ride and felt more short of breath than usual... followed by a few days of feeling like I couldn't catch my breath. Not uncommon for me over the past few months, anxiety related... and this is a high stress situation if anything... but no other symptoms... no fevers... no cough... Had a bit of a cold 2 weeks ago though. ... Monday and Tuesday this week felt great most of the day, didn't even feel extra winded during my HIIT workouts... bit of a agitated throat in the evenings and some headaches though... ... Today a bit down again, headaches, feel hot, but slight chills.... no trouble breathing... but some chest congestion (with small amount of phlegm..) agitated but not sore throat......
Hoping tomorrow bounce back in the opposite direction again....
Still nowhere sick enough to feel like it would keep me down.. and gonna do a strength workout here soon... so definitely mild .. whatever it is... (psychosomatic?, since I ran to fill the water bottles and pick up something from home depot yesterday?)

Misinformation based on a misunderstanding of what those numbers mean. No one has ANY IDEA of the spread of the virus, because the "active case" numbers are highly dependent upon the rate of testing. If you stop testing does that mean the virus stops spreading? How does the rate of testing vary from country to country? I'm sure you can understand if one country is testing 20x as many people per day, they are much more likely to show increases. Sadly, in the case of the US, the virus got broadly entrenched in our society before tests became broadly available.

Switching topics.... I just got an email from the Army and Air Force Exchange asking members to stop using cash. Some locations may go to electronic-only payments. (For those not in the know, the military exchange is the military base equivalent of a Walmart)

#1) The public doesn't directly call the Watch Commander. You can call communications and voice your complaint and if you desire, they will have a patrol supervisor call you back.

#2) Aside from what everybody wants to believe, even though I'm retired, I always wondered under what authority Newsom's order could actually be enforced as a "criminal" offense. At least two of the departments where I still have friends working have received directions that while they can educate the public, a violation of the Governor's order is NOT enforceable by the police at this time.

If you've been paying attention up in LA, Garcetti and Villanueva are slinging from the hip and making up rules as they go along. After trying to order gun stores closed, they were smacked down by their own legal counsel and told they can't do that. All they did instead is now create a greater demand as there were lines outside the gun stores shown on the news.

Exactly and one number missing from that chart is "how many people per X" are infected. What looks like a great number might not be in the grand scheme of things. For example, Italy has 1144 cases per million compared to the USA's 166 per million. That's a pretty large gap. https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

All I think the deputies should do is get on the P.A. and tell the assembled to disassemble IMMEDIATELY.

And if you can't reach the Watch Commander, go straight to the Captain! :D

Went for a hike today in Aliso woods (yes used a legal way in) with my wife. Very few people out and most were by themselves or what looked like family and practicing SD. (Except for a group of 3 riders who were a bit too close together on the fireroad). Very peaceful. The faucet sure turn on there on the weekends though, hope idiots don’t ruin it for the rest of us
