An injured mountain biker was rescued after falling into a hole 15 feet deep west of Lake Elsinore in the Cleveland National Forest on Thursday, March 19, Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department said.

The accident was reported just after 11 a.m. on the San Juan Trail in the El Cariso area. The 11-mile trail roughly parallels Ortega Highway, also known as Highway 74. Nineteen firefighters from Cal Fire and the U.S. Forest Service responded. The rider was hospitalized with moderate injuries, Cal Fire said.

It was unclear how or when the hole was created. The trail has an elevation change of 3,500 feet and is rated moderate to strenuous in difficulty, according to the Forest Service website.

I wonder if the hole is on the trail itself and if so, the trail will be marked with caution or even closed util it can be repaired.

And/or hitting the bottom of sinkholes.... I could make a guess where that sinkhole is if it's on Old San Juan

My guess is one of the drainage crossings where if you botched it just right you could go 15' down.

That's what I was thinking... A couple of them have gotten washed out a bit and one could have gone completely.

The ruts are coming back, too. I watched the professor rag doll down the trail the other day after hitting a mini trench wrong at mach chicken. I thought he was going over the side... But he lived!

I hate to say it but those two things (the Faust giggle and the Professor's crashing) seem to happen a lot. Cheers to you both!

Definitely looks like that spot on Old San Juan (pic in the attached article). If you took the lollipop clockwise from cocktail rock it is on the uphill before you get to the intersection of San Juan. Going uphill.... just don't look at it and not a problem, just a bit narrow. Last went by there in January with @sir crashalot. We often do that section downhill on our way from Blue Jay to CR then Viejo Tie and Chiquito. It's a little sketchy going downhill with speed and come around the corner to see the trail barely hanging on and pretty narrow. A few other spots similar shape on Chiquito in Lion Canyon too. Last time Gary and I stopped and talked there and said the trail would need to be rerouted soon cause it's gonna fall into the creek.

The article didn't say anything about the biker's injuries, hope he is ok. I'd guess he was incapacitated to have to call for help, since that hole isn't so deep you couldn't climb out if you were able. The bottom is actually the creek that has eaten away the bank that the trail is on.

Oh, that hole? Fifteen feet – what hyberbolic drama queen wrote that?

If something can happen on or off a mountain bike in OC, San Juan is the place it will happen. The kook epicenter of OC MTB. Yea, yea, anything can happen to anyone. And it does. At San Juan.
