Bar size....

Not sure if this has been discussed... I tried searching but didn't find it..so here goes.

When I get my new bike, I will be replacing the bars.. despite the higher than average stack height, and 15mm of rise that comes on the stock setup, I need a bit more height to get in a comfortable position.

Looking at two options... stick with the the 31.8 clamp, but there seems to be a lack of 35 mm rise bars in that size.... so would be going 40mm...

Or.

Swap to a 35 mm clamp and get some "fat" bars... lots of 35mm rise options there...

My understanding is the fat bars are more stiff... more tiring on the hands... more feedback....
Is this the general consensus?

I'm not going to be sending huge jumps or drops so I think the 31.8 would be ok... just a lack of 35mm rise options in that section...

Looking at alloy.. not carbon

Anyone have experience with the fatter bar standard? Ideas? Suggestions...

H-bar is one place that CF is worth spending for IMO. I do believe the diameter makes a difference. The 35mm alloy bar that I have is nearly unforgiving. I got the weez a 31.8 CF for the compliance and damping.

By your description your stem is slammed now, so my first thought would be to add spacers under the stem to open up your bar choices. I don't know specifically about tall riser bars.

Yup, I know that I'm getting a rise, 35 to 40...

Just wondering about advantages disadvantages of the fat bars vs standard...

 

35mm alloy bars are gonna be stiff...really stiff. Great if are send ing it big, or if you are really heavy.

check out some inexpensive stems. For under $40 you should be able to find a stem that has a bit more rise. add that to the 35mm rise you seek on the bars and you should be good to go.

 

I ride 35mm on everything. Aluminum on my DH bike and CF on my Yeti SB5.5. I used to be more skeptical about them, but it doesn't bother me now. I have had one good crash where I nicked up my CF bars on something stupid and just replaced them instead of chancing it. I have to say, I like the compliance aspect of them. They definitely are more comfy than aluminum. If you look around you can find good deals. I honestly wouldn't be too concerned about size and just find something that fits the width/rise/sweep that you like. I'm pretty partial to Chromag bars.

I like long bars; Popasitas in Houston has a big long bar. I one time spread out a 3 frame J size on the bar (32"x132" long) and discussed technical facts with my customer while sipping margs. Ah those were the days
