I have read his wife was NOT on board. He was taking his 13 year old daughter to a travel league basketball game. No word on the other 3 fatalities, though obviously one of them is a pilot.

As of 3:12 pm, new reports say there may be as many as 9 on board.

Horrible indeed. I can't imagine what those guys must have witnessed when they got close (and what First Responders see constantly). That has to stick with you.

I've driven by a couple times, including today, and was selfishly happy to see that they have the trail completely closed. Not just the crash site, but all access points to the loop are blocked off, some with police presence. I'm sure the lookieloos will make their way up there eventually, but it least it's not geting ravaged for now. They also essentially bulldozed a road from the actual road to the crash site, that, while unsightly, is at least helping preserve the trail from getting thrashed being used for recovery efforts.

Yeah, I feel for the riders. I saw the carnage up close after a C130 crash when I was in the military. It is something they will never get over.

He is correct. It's not a Kobe Bryant story - it's the loss of four families and loved ones. Virtually everyone I talk with is one or two degrees of separation from at least one of the people who were on board. For me, it's the baseball coach Altobelli. My former AD is the assistant coach of the OCC team and had to meet with the team to tell them the news. I've run into sooooo many people who knew the girls from basketball, or the baseball coach, or the basketball coach, or who know the brothers or sisters of one of the victims. The sports community is tight down here, and the Bryants, Altobellis and others were a big part of their schools, churches and neighborhoods.

The bikers who came upon the wreckage saw things that will haunt them forever. Stuff that usually only first responders and military have to see. I feel bad for them as well.

DBH, you might want correct the misinformation.

The families noted that misinformation around this tragedy was a painful addition to their loss.

    TIA.

    Hey Guys,
Help me in my ignorance. I guess I'm not seeing anything intentionally disrespectful.
There has been lots of tragedies discussed on the site. I'm confident we are far from mainstream media.
Please help me understand what I'm missing.
I'll change the title to better fit the situation.
    Thanks!

We are far from mainstream media- for now. But a webpage like this lasts "forever", and can pop up in a search. Although this thread does not, searching for "mountain biker Kobe crash" brings back the morbid MTBR thread near the top. That's gonna leave a great taste for bikers in his wife's mouth...

The first statement from his wife mentioned the amount of misinformation that quickly spread immediately after the tragedy... There are several posts in this thread which shared that same misinformation, including that his wife was dead.

Up to you, of course. Just pointing out that you're small taters today, but someday you might be a big media spud.
