Love all y'all, but I will not do another group ride on a trail I don't know.

On my first GE ride it was a good thing I paid attention to geographic features, because I ended up dropped like a bad habit. Had to find my own way back.

Not complaining, just stating a fact. Know where you are and where you're going.

That does suck, and knowing your surroundings (or having devices that know your surroundings) regardless is sage advice. I'm surprised you had that experience with this group (if it was this group). On the GE ride that I did there were at least 3 or 4 breaks in 17ish miles to let everyone regroup, and heads were counted at those breaks. In the one instance where a couple folks didn't materialize in the expected amount of time someone rode back to check on them, but then they quickly appeared. The "no rider left behind" mantra seemed alive and well.

I think can speak for a bunch of us in that we have learned a lot about group riding since then. The more recent group rides really have gone much better. I don’t think we had anyone running sweep on the day your talking about and that really is just as important as a good ride leader.

Bingo. When I “lead” a ride, I take it upon myself to sweep. If someone wants to help, cool, but I don’t expect it.

It's good that you put this out there, Mark. Because you were forthright in doing so, I believe you can depend on the group to help get you to point B safely and successfully. Everybody can use a little constructive criticism, and everybody can buff up their routine with that in mind. Give these guys another chance. Like VTom implied, practice makes perfect.

To hopefully make up for my flagrant derail of this thread, I tested out Tailwind for the first time today. It was a relatively short (15ish mile) ride, but I started it intentionally mildly under fed to see what TW is all about. I felt fully gassed the whole ride, and didn't need to stop to eat any of the snacks I had in my bag. Also didn't end the ride craving sugar as I usually do. I'm sure it will be even better with a good base meal as a foundation.

I really can't make it this time. Didn't mean to sound like I would never do a group ride - just meant I wouldn't do it on an unfamiliar trail. I really wasn't complaining. ;)

More of a PSA that people should always have situational awareness.

Hah, Matt, I figured you meant spent, because that’s how I felt a good bunch of last time out... After six hours I was in survival mode, and I mean that as a TW compliment because I actually was able to keep going another 8+ of climbing plus shenanigans after that. I started pounding the TW midway and had no hand cramps or real reason to stop.
