Not sure if it’s called road rash if its on the dirt. Riding on little sleep and pushed a bit too hard on Cactus. Lost concentration and went down at ~18mph. Don’t downhill drowsy!

Bummer, Stevers! Speedy healing to you.

Once my buddy went down in the street at the top speed we could spin out our cruisers. Wearing shorts and flipflops. He treated his injuries with a salve that kept them from drying out and being painful. But some got infected and prolonged his healing time by a lot. So I always try to let rash injuries dry out. And also keep them dry in the shower. Painful, you bet. So it goes...stay inside and never get hurt. F that!!!!!!!!!

Bike is great! I chucked myself off, and the bike fell gingerly on its side. I think I lost a grip plug, but handlebars didn't turn and the chain didn't even fall off. Imagine if I was still using clips instead of flats.

My knee is scraped up and I'm pretty sure I bruised a rib or two, but the silver lining is that my helmet got dented and I seem to be concussion free. MIPS FTW! I have time to contemplate why I wasn't wearing my g-form knee pads. I bought them (and brought them) but wasn't wearing them. I do about 200 runs at Whiting per year - just a matter of time before I go down again. My head, elbow, and forearms are no worse for wear because of protection, but why wasn't I wearing knee pads?

I forgot to thank the nice lady on the Yeti that stopped to make sure I wasn't disoriented or more injured than I thought. If she's on the board, huge thanks!

Also, my wife is the most amazing person. She never gets angry when I hurt myself, and I can see her fighting off the tears when she thinks I'm not looking.

Looks like you got rash and impact glad it wasn't worse. That dirt is rock hard under the loose.

I wear light pads more often especially as trails get dryer... And wash out potential gets higher. Especially knee they are so comfortable now it is hardly no reason not to...

Me thinks that shoulder will be sore a bit impact wise too..

Understanding wives are awesome we have a special of old set of sheets when I am hmmmm oozing...

Day 3 update. The rashing on the shoulder is getting better, largely without much care. The biggest pain is my knee, but I gooped vaseline on it immediately so didnt get a chance to snap a before picture. Skin is growing back nicely, just changing out the vaseline couple times a day til it stops bleeding. Knee is really sore, and bruised ribs stabs when I breathe deep. Skin will likely grow back before I’m ready to ride.

On the note of dry vs wet healing, I tend to prefer wet healing for larger rashing. Being a pansy for pain, I don't scrub/tweeze all the dirt out of the wound. Keeping it wet with vaseline/aquaphor/second skin will allow the area to heal faster and push out the dirt as it bleeds. It also helps to work from home and ensure the area is clean, and the ointment gets cleaned out and reapplied as it changes color (from the bleeding) or dries up.

    Good progress!

Scrub that borderline-infected yellow stuff off your knee, though. It won’t hurt a bit.

Neosporin is my go to on road rash. Always put it on asap to kill any bacteria after a good scrub.

Don't think it's been mentioned, but since they "improved" Cactus the trail is like polished concrete with loose on top. The bobcat they used packed it down tight. I ride it a lot, and braking can cause the rear to slide easily., and it's definitely prudent for me to dial it back from full bore unless damp.

Once you're healed @stevers PM me, I'll do a loop with you at whiting.

Remind me of a time when I was talking to a guy on the trail. His helmet had a large chunk missing, like the size of a orange. I mentioned he should buy a new one, he said it was still good for a few years use. I guess you just can't fix stupid.....

I tossed my helmet, and carbon bars after my crash at last year's Hell Ride. I didn't mind the helmet, as it it obviously took an impact, but the bars were more of a preventive disposal... better safe than sorry I suppose.

Take that helmet to Troy Lee in Laguna and they will give you a substantial discount on a new one.

I've tossed helmets, but never thought about the carbon bars. Thinking about it I believe your correct, with a good impact it's a good preventive measure.

Had I known that I would not have thrown out my last TLD A1.... :(

Will do! I ride cactus at least 3x a week when I can, so I get lazy with my protection. Not anymore!

Good to know! I was going to cut the chin straps and chuck it.

The TLD crash policy says 30% off retail, but I see other online retailers have it for > 30% off. I think I'll keep the helmet and mount it in the garage over the bikes as a reminder to be diligent about wearing pads.
