If you are running into bugs it means you are biking too late :) You need to hit the trail before the bugs wake up :)

Fortunately I gave you all those extra tubes :) If you were @mtnbikej , he'd pull some leaves off the nearest branch, plug the hole, whip it around his head a few times to inflate it, and be off down the trail faster than you could say "show off!"

You should have thrown in a saddle bag so he can carry tubes and tools for mechanical mishaps. At least it was just a 10min walk back to the car.

Serious response: Did you narrow down the cause? Most likely one of two things: The tire was under-inflated, so you pinch-flatted the tube when you rode over something, crushing it between the object and the rim. Or you punctured with glass, a goathead (my bane) or similar sharp object.

Both can be avoided by going tubeless, but that's a 300 level course.

Been there, done that... It sucks.

I'm glad to see farther down the thread that you narrowed down the cause.

So is a pinched tube easy to spot? Is it a hole or rip?

In the field it can be tricky, but the location will be off to the side and usually two marks if not two holes. (Hence the name snakebite.) Very easy to spot with the aired-up tube submerged in water. :D

Now you know! Until you go tubeless (oh, you will...) it's a bit of a challenge to find that point that your tires are inflated enough to protect from pinch flats vs. having them soft enough to provide traction. That pressure is lower with tubeless, so they are able to give a LOT more traction.

But to paraphrase a wise man, just tuck that chicken nugget of knowledge away, and go out and ride your bike!!!

Thanks Mike!! :D I've heard of pinch flats, but my habit is probably too much air. Even when my tires are where I like them, they're still pretty supple. I immediately went tubeless after goatheads got me my first time out.

As I have been spending a ton of time on my new bike, my girlfriend now wants to join in on my new obsession.

That being said, I'm looking for another bike.... I'd rather not clog the up the classified section with another thread.

She's 5 ft so I'm thinking she needs a size small or X small if that's even a thing.

They are out there! The small size bikes are usually the ones you find on crazy blowout prices after all of the mediums and larges sell out. But maybe an IMTBer has one lying around...

That's pretty awesome that she's interested.

X-small frames are hard to come by, and hard to sell. I've had multiple cold offers for my wife's xs yeti ASR-5 circa 2011. Just people buying other things and they see the bike and want it for their wife/sig other. Even though she barely rides it, the bike will never get sold. I regret selling her old TNT turner flux frame. Should have kept it as a backup or a guest bike for newbies that want to check it out.

I hope to! I need to stop braking stuff though. I broke my chain at the loop yesterday.

    Sh!t!

I break chains frequently, but I run a single speed... Time for a multitool and some spare links.
