I think one of the Mikes did it recently. You have to detour on hwy 2 past Redbox tho.
Get a paper map and also download the route on to your phone from Trailforks, etc.
They may be other riders on the tour who have been there to guide you.
Post up if you plan on going!

EDIT: My bad, I was thinking of the Enduro Day for the detour.

    Hey Vino!
I'm not exactly sure what the "Chilao Epic" is but many here have ridden Chilao many many times.
    It's a great area.
I can upload a STRAVA route here when I get home tonight if you like. @rossage has put a nice route together on it where you get the goods twice!

    Welcome back!

    If I was there...

You guys here who don't know this dood with the beastly avatar can go forth confidently with him as a partner. Full vouch here, solid all around rider and BC athlete. Rarely hospitalized; acceptable survival instincts.

vino, kidnap your family this summer and take em to Lake Tahoe in a rented RV. Some Downieville and Tahoe Rim therapy would do everyone good :)

This is essentially what it comes down to. I asked about it on the San Gabriel Trailriders FB page because I was thinking about trying it next time as well. I know the initial drop is at Hillyer to Silver Moccasin to Charleton Flats but w/o being an expert on the area, I'm kind of lost from there. The owner of Mt Wilson shuttles told me you hook up with the Gabrieleno Trail but looking at Trailforks, I don't see where the two hook up....unless you're expected to go down Hwy 2 on the pavement to RedBox/Gabrieleno. I also asked about connecting it with Mt Lowe at the bottom and he said you can do that by climbing up the road 3 miles from the top of Red Box.

I thought @Luis said they did lower Silver Moccasin over to the Gabrielino Trail, but I heard that section of SM is kinda brutal. I too would like to more about this ride.

We started at 3 Pts and rode the Silver Mocassin all the way thru Chilao, Charlton, Shortcut, and down to West fork. Got on the Gabrielino after a fireroad climb. Finishing at Chantry or down the road in Arcadia.
    28 miles 4000+ft

Right now, the trail is not in the best shape. Trees down and water damage. Still a good ride but tough. The section from Shortcut to West fork is sketchy even in good condition so I would expect to find trees down and trail damage now.

    When is this ride? :whistling:

    Chilao epic you say?
Just as there are many ways to skin a cat, there are various options on a Chilao epic.
It all depends on where you want the ride to end. Either at JPL or Arcadia.
From Hillyer or Chilao you are basically following the Silver moccasin trail up and over Charlton flats and up and over shortcut saddle.
From shortcut saddle the silver Moc takes you to west fork. That’s where the Gabrielino trail and Rincon-Redbox FR are. Heading east on the fireroad takes you up to Newcomb saddle and the junction of Rim trail and the Gabrielino.
If you follow the Gab eastward here, you end up at Chantry flats.
If you take the Rim trail up you will come out at the Mt Wilson observatories. From there it’s a quick downhill ride on the road to the Eaton saddle and the chunky front side stuff. Merrills, Sunset, El Prieto.

The other option at west fork is to head west to Redbox via the Redbox-Rincón fireroad. There you can do a three mile road ride up to Eaton saddle and the ride front side stuff. OR at Redbox continue west on the Gabrielino and follow that all the way down to the arroyo and our to JPL.

What about the "other" Chilao Epic?

Taking the Gab West until you bump into NASA JPL.

Hwy 2 was still closed at Redbox last weekend. Will it be open or does the shuttle have an alternate route?

Turn left at Clear Creek. 18 miles later and you'll be back on the 2, past the slide.
Adds about 30 minutes each way

Yes, just slightly. Saves 15 minutes if I remember. I took David and I one hour to get up to Chantry flats.

I’m really contemplating doing this on Saturday. I have two other suckers.... I mean buddies that are game as well
