I know a few people who have been air evac'ed off cliffs and from the BC, none paid for the chopper ride. @rossage?

Not saying a person could never be charged, or that insurance is a bad idea. In a NP, you can be charged for rescue if found negligent. I was not charged within the Park or a separate flight to another city. Another time it was a news/ex-nam pilot – just a "get well soon," no bill. CalFire et al, I don't know for sure, but I don't think emergency services stick you with a chopper bill if it's a legit rescue and you weren't being a blatant kook.

Get the insurance if it's good with you. I'm going to ensure my beacon is current, try not to get in trouble in the first place, or have what I need to get out of trouble myself.

Almost put my plan into action in Palm Canyon. Started kinda late, but should have had plenty of time, except the trail was in such bad shape that I wasted a huge amount of time getting through. But I had prepared in case I got cold, and brought a light with me just in case too. I didn't end up needing the warmth, but I was HAB'ing the end with the light (swallowed my pride and walked the tech instead of riding because of my foot). My girlfriend was also tracking my Garmin, so if I looked stuck, she could call for help.

Still think I am going to get a satellite beacon again soon.

    Not yet, Rob.

Like @mike said, I have never heard of anyone getting stuck with the airlift bill, but wanted to see if anyone had experience with this type of service.

No bill for me. It was only a 3 or 4 minute flight, and I think they have a 15 minute grace time... :whistling:

I always roll with my dog tags. For those who don't know - they come in a pair. Long chain with one tag, and short chain (loop hanging from the first) with the second. The first tag they put in your mouth when you are found dead as a casualty on the field. The second they loop on your big toe... in case they can't find your mouth.

On that note... I THOUGHT THIS WAS A ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE THREAD! I have three cases of MRE's in the closet (I always rotate stock) and an assault shotgun... where people keep assault shotguns.

Oh and when I ride (at this time of year) I toss one of those emergency foil blanket things in my pack.

I don't carry anything much except for some first aid stuff. But when riding places that I normally have not ridden in a while I carry my cell phone and check for coverage 1/2 out. You would be surprised the places that do not get cell. I have been down on the trail in the dark before and you quickly realize that you are becoming part of the food chain. Clicking on the phone and seeing service makes your heart calm down quickly. (only after you can untangle enough and actually reach it) Realizing you are way up a hill and knowing exactly where you are and the people you talking to do not have a clue.... well that is priceless.
Crawling back to your bike and finding the light is not broken it is pointed straight up and shining bright......even better, all though you were really messing your pants thinking it's broken, you are damaged, way up there, by yourself, well almost alone: you and some cats.
Happy "dam" I cannot reach my camel back because I am pinched on my back facing head first down this trail, on the night trails in the really black hills.

Sacrificing a limb to live... grim, but you could do it. People are like, you’ll go into shock... Bull shite, you’ll go into survival mode and do things you never thought you could.

    But, er yea, prevention!!
