Several years ago, I noticed a "trail" sign with an arrow posted just a little ways down the street from my location. I always thought it was odd because it was posted at the edge of a flood control concrete channel with the arrow pointed in the direction that would lead you to hike up and along the channel toward the San Gabes. But the channel had long since been fenced off by Flood Control. Recently, the signage has been relocated to the closest street intersection and upgraded to a SOT sign but it is posted nowhere near the actual route. What gives?

 

Someone stole it off the mountain. They're hoping to have the flood control channel designated as wilderness.

 

I’ve seen this done at a SOT access trail...so it may actually be a legal trail to mtb or dirt bike on

That's sort of what I was thinking. This could be a supply restocking route for those doing large sections or the entirety of the SOT. The sign is posted in the middle of town with no trail head of any sort within a half mile or more.

I used to see foot travelers coming through my area with huge packs on their backs. I wonder if those folks were SOT'ers?

 

You may be right, there are quite a few access trails that will get the hikers into a town or on to a main road. If the hikers have done their pre hike homework, they should know about these sections. One of our access trails will dump them off near the post office to p/u the supplies they mailed to themselves.
Someday I’d like to hike the full SOT!

Really!?! I would have never assumed you don’t dig cat holes. In fact, I would have steriotyped you an expert. Don’t worry...even if you have never practiced, if ya really gotta go, it’ll come naturally to you and wherever you find yourself will be quite suitable.
