You guys that have been out in the snow and rain, make sure you take that wet gear out of your bag and let it dry.
We got a couple of days till the next round of rain.
Don't forget the shoes and gloves...
Re-lube your chain and check your brake pads.

I strip down in the basement and throw it all in the wash. Pack goes in, too! Then I make the mad dash streak upstairs!

I cleaned up both bikes today... probably got 5 pounds of grit out.

I also ordered some pants. That “slushee in the shorts” feeling was a little too thrilling for me! I don't need that much excitement...

Basement? Are they including basements in modern houses?

I have a room below ground level, so we refer to it as the basement.

I take small storage bin with me and in it is a pair of dry pants, t shirt, shoes, and a towel. I usual change right at the trail head, put all my yucky gear in the bin and when I get home I hang them up to dry out and then wash in the next laundry round. It’s funny cuz I think I have more MTB clothes than normal clothes.

Yes, it's a basement but generally speaking, basements are rare out West, especially in modern homes. Do your neighbors/friends have basements?

Neighbors... Every single one... :p And to put it in perspective, basements are extremely popular in California compared to Florida. :p

Now maybe we can return to our regularly scheduled programming of Uncle Ross's Wet Weather Wisdoms.

Stuffing newspapers in your wet shoes helps expedite the drying process.
Read that online and since no one reads newspapers anymore, I remove the insoles and stuff the shoes with dry cleaning rags instead.

I have a fan in the garage....pull the insoles out and put the wet shoes in front of the fan for a couple hours.....all dry.

Same here. Hang the stuff in front of the fan, boot and gloves too, dry in a couple of hours.

Hey @Luis! Try Stuffing your shoes with internet "fake " news!

My shoes are on top of the wife's curio cabinet, which is strategically placed under the heater vent and ceiling fan. She hasn't noticed them yet... :p

How about the smell? My trail running shoes get quite the funk from going through streams. Fan dry in the garage after a good hosing.

I washed them out in the creek crossings on the way down. Good clean freezing cold water...

I'm shopping for water proof shoes next... Ordered pants yesterday!

A couple extra items that are essential for me as well. First is a boot dryer. So much worth the $35!! Plop it on after your ride and your shoes will be toasty warm by next days ride.

For waterproof gear I also use this Tech wash which is specific to maintain waterproofness when washing. I hang instead of putting the gear in the dryer.

I've tried some waterproof running shoes, the problem is that once you get ankle deep, the water seeps in and then stays in.
The recent creeks I was in were pretty mucky and muddy. No clean water there.

By using a combo of the Shimano MW-81 boot, some gaiters, and long rain pants, I am able to survive a deep dip or two but you gotta be quick.
You are right, if the water gets into the top of a gore tex shoe, it's staying there for a while.

My problem with the TX.Direct Wash-In is that it waterproofs the inside of the garment as well, and then the sweat has no where to go. For that reason, I prefer the Nikwax spray to use only on the exterior of the garment.

If it’s just for the day and the temps are not too low, that water will warm up and help insulate your feet. Cotton kills, of course.

Yep. I've done this numerous times. That brings us to:

    Top #420-Don't over-sock yourself.

That is, don't stuff super thick socks into your shoes. If your shoes are tight and you can't wiggle your toes, you're going to get cold feet anyway.

A tip to live by – right on, Ross. Air (and water in a pinch) is insulation! If the Germans had deployed tip 420 in their invasion of Russia, they might not have been rebuffed. The Russians sized their boots generously. :geek:

No understand why super-tight gloves. Those make my hands cold and tired. XXL here, please.
