Art Smith Trail... Strava says 7.5 miles from the oasis to the bottom. It's not a "DH all the way" type trail, with the climbs lasting pretty much to the end. Lots of chunk and scenery.

Nice vid. Challenging trail - especially tacked on at the end of the day.

I still felt fine at the end, but our #2 was really hurting... I stayed with him for most of the trail. I forgot just how much "up" was on that downhill, with climbing sections right to the end.

The last time I did that trail on a steel hardtail with 100mm fork, one gear, no dropper and 2.2 Ikons. And we were faster! :D

But my ass hurt a lot less this time.

    Thanks, Scan the Man!

It's a great way to end Palm Canyon. And there's a lot more chunk that I edited out just to make the video shorter. I want to go back.

I’ve never finished PCE on Art Smith. Need to do it!

From the video it appears you were avoiding the rocks... you were on the Hightower, right? :whistling:

I edited out all the rocks. That was the smooth stuff. :p

And I was a lot faster on the steel hardtail with one gear... That must be a single speed trail. :whistling:

I hope to get a chance to ride that, looks pretty cool! Thanks for the vid.
Can Art Smith be climbed as an out and back?

That sounds like a question for the guys who know it better than I do. I'd say no... There's a lot of HAB even on the way down.

Looks like a crappy climb from the parking lot. I know some who have done it. I love a good climb, but that looks like a lot of HAB.

Well I am one who will do that sort of thing if the trail has the goods, and judging by the video it has it. As long as there is a fair amount of riding on the way up then I am interested, it sounds like there could be some down hill on the way up ? A bit of hiking and a ride wrapped into one sounds good to me.

That’s still probably the easiest way to do Art Smith. It’s a popular hike. NBD with a bike. The vistas are stellar, and you’d even get some DH on the way up.

Thanks mike, I will be in PS in March and if the weather permits I will give it a go. I’m assuming NBD means never been done ( by you)?

@hill^billy, I have not gone up Art Smith by any means. But if I wanted to ride down it with the least commitment and logistics, I would park at the well-marked TH on the 74 and push/ride my bike up.

It actually sounds like a pretty chill few hours out. Optionally, you could take a break at the Oasis then climb/drop Hahn Buena Vista trail and loop back to the Oasis via a couple steep miles of pedaling up Dunn Road. That would make it full(er) value

I was actually dreading the right turn onto Dunn Road after we did Hahn Buena Vista, but the climb wasn't really that bad, and it was over pretty quickly. I can see doing that as a regular add on. In fact, I'm ready to go back.

A buddy talked me into riding Art Smith today as an out and back with a lollipop of HBV and back up Dunn Rd to the tractor/oasis again. I'd never done Art Smith or up Dunn Rd. and curiosity got the better of me.

I knew it was going to be tough from previous RRs and looking at Trailforks. It didn't disappoint. Total of 23.5 mi with 5,370 ft of ascent. Going up AS sucked. I won't do that again. Lots of HAB. Down AS was pretty fun. I'd end PCE that way if someone wanted to. The climb back up Dunn sucked too, but at least it was rideable...barely. By the time we got to the tractor for the second time my Garmin showed 14.3 mi and 4012 ft of climbing. Ugh!

Oh well. Now I know, right?

Nice ride, R. Cheer up, you rode your bike!

Developing an immunity to HAB depression pays dividends. With today’s gearing, you can push your bike as fast as you’d be pedaling it. Yes it could take effort, then next time you do it it takes less. Next thing you know, you can literally take your bike anywhere you can walk and have fun doing it. Why do I see a blank look on your face right now? :gotnothing::D:thumbsup:

Art Smith though a tough finish to PCE is still my favorite.

I do like your positive outlook. I guess I see it as I could have been riding PCE from the top, which is so much fun. HAB, when it's the only option to get to something really good, I can accept.

Not sure why we think we have to do so much? I will probablly be by myself when I do this because most will think it’s not enough to drive all the way out there, hopefully when I attempt this it will be about half as much or a little more than half. I’ll be satisfieed with new rock and dirt and nothing but high quality ST!
