Ride Name: Super Blood Wolf Moon Lunar Eclipse Blackstar MTB Ride
    When: Sunday, January 20th, 2019
    Time: 6:30 pm
Where:Xmas Tree Farm on Blackstar Canyon Rd
Ride Description or Details: We've got this Super Blood Wolf Moon Lunar Eclipse coming up. How about we ride up into the mountains and howl at the moon?

Us slower folks will be starting at 6:30 (rolling, not just getting there -
by Garmin or Verizon timekeeping) to make it to Beek's by 8:30.
Faster people can start later or do extra credit past Beek's place.
The goal is to meet at Beek's at 8:30 and watch the eclipse.
I plan to stay for awhile at Beek's (conditions permitting) to watch the eclipse. Extra warm clothes will be helpful.

Here's a schedule of the eclipse.

6:36 pm Sun, Jan 20 Penumbral Eclipse begins The Earth's penumbra start touching the Moon's face.
7:33 pm Sun, Jan 20 Partial Eclipse begins Partial moon eclipse starts - moon is getting red.
8:41 pm Sun, Jan 20 Total Eclipse begins Total moon eclipse starts - completely red moon.
9:12 pm Sun, Jan 20 Maximum Eclipse Moon is closest to the center of the shadow.
9:43 pm Sun, Jan 20 Total Eclipse ends Total moon eclipse ends
10:50 pm Sun, Jan 20 Partial Eclipse ends Partial moon eclipse ends.
11:48 pm Sun, Jan 20 Penumbral Eclipse ends The Earth's penumbra ends.

Lights will be needed but we will have some moon, 99% illumination waxing gibbous moon - if it's clear; and when it's not the eclipse
    https://www.moongiant.com/phase/01/20/2019

Weather will probably be cool to cold; so we won't have to worry as much about keeping the beer cold; more about keeping ourselves warm.

Any significant rain on the day or preceding days will cancel as none of use want that Blackstar clay.

    ?'s - Ask away.
Invite others, let's make it a party.

I’m off for MLK day on the 21st so I’m in for this as long as my wife hasn’t already spoken for me elsewhere.

It’ll be a good leg warmup for getting back on skis in Mammoth later that week (haven’t skied in 25 years, all snowboarding since then).

Not sure how/if all this rain is gonna mess with us.
    Will have to keep watch.
I had previously thought of Maple Springs as an alternate - but looks like that won'd work for me now due to other things.

I started as a skier then moved to snowboarding at around 12 and spent several seasons as a park rat hitting anything and everything that Summit/Bear/Mammoth were building in their parks in the late 90’s to mid 00’s.

My riding dwindled down to just a trip or two per season so I started avoiding the park. While I love riding big mountain terrain conditions don’t always align with my sparse riding and riding groomed runs on my snowboard has become a bore. Riding my snowboard at local places like Bear/Summit are just not fun at all now that I don’t ride park (I’ll hit some smaller jumps and rails/boxes still but nothing like I used to and it’s kind of frustrating).

This trip is going to be my son’s first time skiing so I thought it would be cool for him to see dad on skis too and that it would be fun for me to challenge myself with skiing while he is in lessons and my wife is watching the baby. If I brought my snowboard I’d want to ride the whole mountain and this way I’ll be entertained sticking to the Canyon Lodge area to check in on the family and maybe even take some runs on skis with my son. (Wife usually snowboards with me but she is on baby duty this trip).

Why not start him on a snowboard? I don’t want to deal with unstrapping boots from binding and the added difficulty that snowboard bring to the flats that don’t exist with skis. If he enjoys it we can go more and I can tow him around with a ski pole in the flats.

@Cornholio it all makes sense now. Hope your kid gets the bug to ski or board.

My snowboard background is very similar. Stopped riding cause the SoCal resorts just don’t measure up to what I got used too. I know if I go local I’ll be bored for the same reasons you stated. UNLESS it’s super deep powder then Baldy is the place to be.

    Have a good trip!

Similar here. I started my girl on skis when she was three because they are easier to manage and more natural than a snowboard. Except walking in the boots. She's 8 now and has skied about a dozen times. Unfortunately, she doesn't share my passion. She likes it, but doesn't love it or yearn to ski. She just started with poles on her last outing. She definitely liked having poles now, but I'm glad I didn't start her with them.

I'm kind of opposite of you regarding skiing/snowboarding. After years of skiing at a competitive level, I decided to teach myself to snowboard (at age 43). For me on a snowboard, just getting off the lift is an accomplishment, and linking turns on a blue run is exciting!

What were we supposed to be talking about? Oh yeah, a Blackstar run at night. Have fun!

Was planning on making this one... but with the rain, I wonder?

Is this going to be one of those rides where 10 riders enter... but none leave? :)

I can't see it being rideable by Sunday, even if the rain stopped now.

Is Maple Springs still off the table?

I'm surprised as well. Just checked strava and noone has ridden BStar gate to gate this week.

Pardon my lack of knowledge of the OC area but if mud is a concern for the big moon ride tomorrow night why not change the route to avoid it or change the location all together?

Not many places allow night riding.

From the looks of it, mud won't be a problem. Passable now on a bike, and two more full days of drying before you wolf-people go howl at the moon.
