For my local 60-90 minute spins, I stopped bringing the camel back. I haven't had a flat in 10 years and I can walk out if I do (like when my chain broke). It feels great not having anything on your back and I'm willing to walk now and then as a penalty.

That said, I would like to carry my phone with me. For a while I used an under-seat bag for the phone plus car key. However, I'm pretty sure that's what destroyed my Iphone 6S. A chip eventually came loose inside the phone and it stopped working.

I've got this fancy Pixel 3 XL now and I'd like to bring it along for pictures and to be reachable by the family in an emergency. I'm thinking of a hip pack and some sort of padded slip-on case? I'm hoping the phone being on me and the padded case will neutralize most of the impacts to the phone from normal riding, and hopefully from most crashes?

Thought I'd see what others have come up with though.

I usually just put it in my jersey pocket.

Knock on wood...:.so far crashes haven’t been a problem.

It’s gotten dirty and muddy a few times.

Sometimes I put it in a ziplock baggie with my lens cleaner and atm card.

Revelate feed bag. Holds my P10, wallet, keys, Clif bar, knife, safety gear and I can even stuff a vest in there if necessary.

I usually ride packless, but that means I carry more on my bike.
Under the seat I carry a tube, CO2, inflator and tire lever in a Specialized Mtn Bandit attached to my Phenom
In a downtube storage container, I carry a multitool, zip ties, tape, der. cable, patch kit, quick links, and some other small items-cleat screw...etc. I can fit all of this in an old seat bag or a Keg-half bottle storage container with a screw on lid that fits in a bottle cage.
This stuff goes with me on every ride. Most of my rides will leave me with a long, lonely, walk if I'm not able to fix something.

I know you said you don’t like to wear a pack, but when I forego the hydration/backpack- I use a smal “hip pack” for phone, keys, and bare essentials. Hardly know it’s there. It’s called the “Das Rad” hip pack from a company called High Above. Check it out

I LOVE bar bags! So far a phone has never been damaged, but I have cheap/crap phone. Phone, wallet, keys, food, clothing... it all goes in.

I carry mine in my jersey pocket. Can't remember the last time I used a pack other than commuting on the road bike.

Phone goes in the jersey pocket... Never had an issue, and I crash a lot. I usually wash it off in the sink when I get home.

@MolarM - Das Rad means "the bike" in German. Real creative marketing team on that one! :Roflmao

I wear baggies and I possess a small profile phone so that it fits in my front pocket for quick access. I like to stop and smell the roses any time I see something worth shooting.

My phone goes in a Rokform case and I have a Banjo Brothers phone pouch that carries that setup. In my middle pocket of my jersey.
I have a seat bag with all the repair stuff I bring that is always on my bike (sometimes I race with it, sometimes I don't - depends on how far the walk could be)

When I do wear a pack, whether for longer rides or change of clothes, the phone package goes in the pack.

Put it in my front zippered pocket of the shorts on the MTB and jersey pocket on the road yet.
If I carry it at all.
I'm on the phone so much for work that I try to avoid it on my time off . But habits are hard to break.

I crashed once - on the GE Reveal Ride - and my phone protected my back from a rock, right where my jersey pocket was. Cracked the screen, though. :Roflmao

Jersey pocket or shorts pocket. Only time it goes in a pack is if the weather is foul or the company I’m with is hideous and unphotogenic :gag:

In a snack-size ziploc baggie (perfect fit!) in my jersey pocket. Several times after a crash I have expected to pull out a phone with a shattered screen, but hasn't happened yet.

FYI, if you have a recent iPhone, disable "raise to wake" (it's under "Display and Brightness" in settings) before an MTB ride. Otherwise you may come back from your ride with a phone that is locked for 20 minutes because you've "entered" numerous incorrect passcodes while it's bounding around.

A replacement phone screen runs around $100. A back replacement runs around 10K-100K +. I think you got a better deal with the broken phone screen.

I use the Quad Lock for my I Phone 7 handle bar mount. The one on the right was the first I bought but it would slip down the taper on my carbon handlebars and would end up upside down on a down hill. ( Mounted with rubber rings and Zip ties. ) I never once lost my phone even with the mount coming loose- Recently I got an email and moved onto the one on the left. It's a little harder to put the phone on and take off but no longer slips around. I leave my phone handlebar mounted even going down the motorway. If I were in a place where it would be darn near impossible to retrieve my phone, chair lift, nasty downhill, race conditions, I would keep it in my pocket.
