    InSight has landed!

NASA put a robotic geologist on the Martian surface yesterday. The culmination of over 10 years work from JPL and others.

I rode with an Aussie scientist a few times over by JPL. He had a PhD in Martian weather. Wonder if he worked on this project...

    A significant achievement for sure.

Eat that, Russia and China. Nobody junks cars around the solar system like the US, biatches.

Lasted about 9 minutes... I guess 9 minutes longer than the Imperial/metric snafu that killed another of our attempts.

    But,
I remember watching the flickering, black and white, static-filled, telecasts of the Apollo missions. I remember the joy and wonder and the crappy "astronaut food" and Tang we consumed.
I felt the childish pride of knowing my country did this.
I still get emotional, and being an Earth Scientist probably enhances the feelings.

Oh yeah, I also sat in front of that same TV and watched Nixon resign.

JPL is local to my area. I've had several folks who work there as neighbors over the years. Some of my clients work there and a few of my local riding buds work there.

    It is pronounced Yr-i-nus

I took a screen shot of my phone of the video that showed the first photo from the lander and sent it to my GF.

    InSight-First-Photo.jpg

The units thing was a huge bummer. There is a reason why 99% of the world is metric...

But I am a fan of all scientific endeavors by all countries, doesn't have to be the US. I just wish Russia had been more successful with less loss of life (their numbers were pretty bad).

There is no wrong planet to study! Besides, Venus is more like Earth than Mars is.

I guess I'm the only one that's not the least bit excited about this. I appreciate that pushing our boundaries via science leads to mere discoveries but this is all kind of "meh" to me and think I could come up with plenty of better ideas for the amount of money that's been invested in going to a galaxy far, far away.

The sad truth is, our planet is rapidly overpopulating. We need to find another place for all these people. These are the first steps toward making that happen. It's my understanding that those who plan to create a living environment on Mars want to get people there ASAP.

Well, since the NASA budget is less than 1% of the federal budget, it might be easier to allocate funds from a larger user of our tax dollars... $600billion for the defense budget would be a great place to re-allocate funds.

    Imagine the infrastructure repairs.
Imagine educating the children of America
    Imagine universal health care.

    Imagine all the people....

I have no doubt that there is wasted $$ in the military budget that needs to be addressed but anything that undermines national defense is a non-starter with me. I have several teachers in my immediate family and ride with several local high school teachers. Education is offered and available to all. The biggest issues are the kids who don't take advantage of it and waste everybody's time in the process. The horror stories I hear about discipline, or lack thereof in the schools in mind boggling. Those kids create problems that effect everybody else and will cost likely go out into the world, do nothing and put their hand out without ever making an attempt to help themselves. They are the people that keep me from ever getting on board with paying even more $$ for universal healthcare. There's already been a study done by Jerry Brown's own people that just to have universal healthcare in this state would take a minimum 15% on every *WORKING* individual in the state. Once again, the people that are willing to work shouldering the burden for those that won't, not can't but won't, work. You willing to pay another 15% in payroll tax for starters?

Besides, we have some version of universal healthcare already, especially if you're not working and just willing to work the system. I worked among the homeless nearly every day in some way for nearly 25 years and they all have Medical/heathcare cards of some sort (state or county) in their possession. I'll be nice and tell you the vast majority of them are not homeless but "urban campers" who choose their lifestyle. Even if they didn't have a Medical card, anybody can walk into any ER and they will treat you without any regard of your ability to pay. I've been to the hospital on many, many calls where the patients were in the is country illegally but still had millions of dollars of healthcare provided to them by out version of universal healthcare.

Dude! We're talking about the Mars landing here.
Not time for a personal political diatribe.

I just think it is an important technological achievement in spite of the fact that they have a tiny budget compared to the Dept of Defense.

    Imagine all the people...
