He mentioned his goals for this ride when we rode in Big Bear last week. Pretty amazing attempt. I hope it's still going well!

I'll let him chime in but it looks like he had to bail after 13-14 hours. It was an amazing attempt though.

This race is mind boggling. Kudos to anyone who is crazy enough to do this. Can't wait to read the RR.

Think I tried to take in too many calories when it was too hot out. I was taking in about 300-400kcal/hr for the first few hours with 2 bottles of water. Mid 90's going up Dam Climb. After 8 hours I pulled in to put my lights on and change kits but had already been struggling for hours with a raging headache and stomach issues. I tried to take a break and see if my body would settle with the cooler temps and getting horizontal, it's worked before. After a couple of hours of that, it was clear that I wouldn't get good enough. I knew I would end up dropping out in the middle of the night. So I cut my losses and decided to go home and get some good sleep and move on. I wasn't a fan of the course, it wasn't fun at all. It was just hard work, and I ride bikes because I enjoy riding. Suffering through on a boring course*, physically demanding course just seemed pointless just to say I have done a 24.

On the bright side, looking at my bike yesterday, I found a missing fastener on my suspension linkage. I don't think any damage was done, but if I stayed out there may have been the potential to wreck my new carbon Epic!

This was my first ever DNF outside of a slashed tire at a Rim Nordic XC race, so I don't feel too bad. I can move forward to work on my other goals for next season now. I know I can always come back and make a 24 attempt another day.

*Course was Dam Climb, which is all fireroad from start to the top of the climb for about 1/4 the lap. Then a fireroad descent that has a short, actually fun technical singletrack. Back to another fireroad climb to a fireroad descent. Tunnel of Love which is a nice singletrack up and down. Overall, I would say half or more of the course was wide and non technical. And Dam Climb is 600' in a little over a mile.

You popped a fork wiper last weekend and now lost a linkage fastener...you need to have a talk with your mechanic.

Good try out there. Finishing is always the goal, but there are those days that you know things just aren’t gonna pan out.

    I was there as well.....

My buddy and I raced in the 8 hours 2 men open division.
Our race was "over" before I got a chance to start my first lap.
We lost more than 20 minutes due to a flat tire, and it cost us a chance to do the seventh lap.
Then my co-rider crashed on his second lap, and we lost a few more minutes.
I finished the sixth lap with 59 minutes to go, and we both knew that there is no way either one of us can pull that miracle today (lap 7).
We ended up 5th. We had a remote chance for a 3rd place if we kept it clean....... Maybe next time.

I got 3 strong laps in, and I'm filling it 40 hours after!
I haven't done much high-intensity riding lately (not my favorite type of riding), and I started cramping on the last 20 minutes of lap 3.
It was my first time in Vail lake this year, and the single tracks are in good shape.
I liked the course. It was longer than any previous race I have done at that venue (probably to reduce the number of total laps for the 24 hours participants).
The weather sucked especially on the second lap.

I don't recommend 2 men team (unless you have someone to hang out with at the pit zone). Half the time I was by myself chilling solo, and the other half I are redlining.
I'm long ways to go from where I need to be in 8 months, but I got time to get better.

My bike was a demo, I have no idea how much love it has received. I will go through the whole thing this off season. Unfortunately getting my hands on it only one week before a 24 isn't ideal, but the options for me were:
    1. Don't race (retrospect, the best idea )
    2. Race an Epic that I have at least ridden a couple of times and like.
    3. Race my hardtail (honestly not a bad idea, but, ouch).
    4. Bought a better bike...for an unknown larger sum of money.

2-person teams can be as hard as solo efforts, although the weather last weekend took its toll on everyone.

I ended up pulling the plug after just 3 laps of the 8-hour, after getting a “chill” at the top of the course when it was 90+ and super dry. Teammates ended up pulling 2nd in the 2-person as a coed team.

I thought the course was appropriate given its focus as a 24 hour event...long enough for teams to compete and enough tech to keep you on your toes, but not enough to cause casualties in the middle of the night. There are more technical bits that show up on the 6/12 events, but this course was difficult enough...it’s been a while since the ‘Marlin’ ridge, one descent has been a part of the course, and you had to pay attention.

Look at the results and you can see the differences between the team laps and solo laps...usually the fast solos are only 30% slower than the teams, but this race had a much larger gap.

With the disappearance of XC opportunities, we need to support our organizers and events and our choices become more constrained...see you all out there in January.

That's my current plan as well.
I'm glad we will not be racing head to head (unless you bolk up for the Clydale division)
