New member, weird timing.

New member, new rider. Maybe an odd time to join the fray here as I had rotator cuff repair surgery (unrelated to taking up mountain biking) 15 days ago, and won't be on the bike for another 3 months or so. This is how I'm getting my fix until then.

Used to ride many years ago, but had only been on a mountain bike a handful of times in the last 2 decades until recently. Decided to get a bike as a more adventurous way to get some regular cardio, and picked up a Giant Fathom 29 2. It only took a few rides for the bug to bite hard, and for me to realize this was going to be a new obsession, and not just a way to get exercise. It also only took about that long to get a handle on the terrain I have access to and the type of riding I want to do, and also realize that a hard tail XC bike wasn't the best choice for that. Unloaded the Fathom and picked up a Trance 29 2. I'm not a Giant fanboy necessarily, but I'm also not a bike mechanic, so I wanted a bike I could get shop support on, and my LBS is a Giant dealer. Kind of have a sentimental attachment too though, as the first nice bike that I saved up for and bought when I was 18 was a Giant Sedona, back in 1992 when the Sedona was a high end MTB.

Anyway, got my rotator cuff tear diagnosis 2 days after I got the bike, but got a good month of riding in before surgery. Did all my riding on various trails off of Las Virgenes in Calabasas. Itching to get back out and explore. Also an avid snowboarder, and fly fisherman, though that's all obviously on hold as well. Love the vibe in here, and look forward to being more of a contributor once I'm back in the saddle.

I think you'll like it here. Take care of that gimpy shoulder for now, then ride a lot and write a lot!

@buggravy stoked you found us. Good place to spend some time while you’re on the mend. I too took a long hiatus dating back to the early 90’s. Came back several years ago and haven’t looked back. Hope you have quick and full recovery.

 

Looks like you are on the other side of the hill from me. I do a lot of riding from here in Simi Valley into Cheeseboro and Las Virgenes Open Space. Welcome aboard!

 

Ouch... Sorry about the diagnosis, but it will be only a bump in the trail... And soon you'll be chasing UPSed through the hills of south Canada.

Welcome @buggravy . I too have been off the bike due to rotator cuff injury and just getting back on the bike.

Yes, that's perfect! And I can (unfortunately?) relate all too well.

Re: your RC injury, did you have surgery? If so, how long were you off, and what has it been like getting back on? Everyone's different obviously, but it helps with perspective.

 

My injury, due to swinging a 15lbs sledge hammer, did not need surgery, but was enough to limit my arm rotation for about 1 month. I got most of my rotation back with physical therapy and icing. I've been flooping it lightly to regain strength. So far so good! I hope you make a speedy recovery!

Indeed, mostly rode Upper LV Canyon, and a little off of Mulholland. Lots of fun stuff around here to keep me busy as I progress it seems. And thanks!
