New here. I just got a mountain bike 2 weeks ago. Trying to get into shape. I have just been going on 8 mile loops through Fairview park to get into it. I rode a little before but nothing serious. Looking forward to checking out more trails after my endurance gets better. Found a few jumps to go off.

    Welcome.

Fairview Park is a good local spot to dial-in some fitness and skills.
When you feel like moving up to the "next level" I can point you in the right directions.
HB is home for many dirt riders, and if you are looking for a group to ride with ask around the local shops.

I would like to give you kudos because you bought a bike that is capable to handle additional skills and fitness. You could continue riding it for many more years.
    Keep it fun.
    Stick with it.
Find like-minded people to ride with, and don't get discouraged when you run out of skills (and luck).

    Be safe.

If you're by fairview park then definitely look up pro bike supply. Otherwise I recommend Roam Cycles off of goldenwest.

Hey @RusPix - welcome to the best little mtb forum west of the Mississippi - and probably east of the Mississippi too.

Nice bike - it will serve you well.

Don't let the local hooligans on this site convince you to eliminate your derailleur or shame you into doing 7000' of climbing in one day. They are awesome peeps to ride with and they love nurturing newer riders.

Ride a lot. Write a lot.

Oh and yes - Pro Bike Supply on Newport Ave near Hoag is a good group of guys to work with, but they don't keep much stock. For that, you must hit The Path.

I know that HB Velo and HB cyclery have organized road ride. I’m not sure about off road. Two Wheel One Planet in Costa Mesa have a regular Sunday shop ride in El Moro.
The Specialized Shop have a few rides posted on FB regularly.

I’m not sure what’s the criteria for”best shop”.
I’m not a big LBS advocate.
Jenson is my go to for parts.
I have a friend who does all the basic maintenance for me (let me know if you need his info).

Where did you get your new bike?

LOTS of locals walk/hike (& run) this trail. I've seen some very senior seniors out there... You can carry some real speed from the San Joaquin Hills entrance. Some blind corners. Make sure you have a bell. Its not a destination trail, IMHO, you'd be better off carrying on to LCWP/IROS/Crystal Cove

There is a good jump park right next to Fairview Park if you want to try some much bigger jumps. Just exit on the river trail at the south end (heading towards the beach), go under the overpass, first left and then a quick right onto the dirt and go in a bit. Ride around in there and you will find it.

Sheep Hills! I used to go there with my BMX bike in the 80s and 90s. As soon as I get more confident I might go check it out.

It is a "good" option if you are looking to mix in some moderate climbing.
It's an out and back trail. climb from CDM to Newport coast and down on the way back.
Keep your down hill speed in check, and watch out for hikers.

I think cruising Bommer Ridge (from Ridge park to the top of Boat) is a better option.
    Safer trail, and better views.

A good loop would be to start near Oasis senior centre in CDM. Climb Buck Gully to San Joaquin Hills, climb Newport Ridge, enter Crystal Cove Park, then follow the fireroad parallel to the toll road. On a quiet time in the day enter Fenceline single track from the west, otherwise if it is busier carry on Bommer Ridge, turn right on Moro ridge and follow it all the way down to the ocean, where the last part of the trail is a semi-single track called BFI. Then turn left into parking lot, climb out towards the main entrance, turn left to PCH. Turn right on PCH, then cross PCH into Crystal Cove State Park on the ocean side of PCH, follow bike path all the way to CDM, back to Oasis.

The climbing of this route is easy, either pavement or Buck gully and the descent to ocean is very scenic. An easy way to get a lot of miles in..
