.......Oh and have FUN!!! I always encourage people to do something physical , especially if it's FUN......because you'll keep doing it!
Strava is a great app to check your progress. It times segments on a ride , keeps track of your best times, and you can follow many of the other hooligans on this site who have ridden the same segments.
    Enjoy!!

That's definitely a firm saddle. Could be gel suspension...no, it's actually an air spring. Stacked high to boot.

    Hi guys!
I'm going to pick up some necessities from the LBS tomorrow. I pretty much have to pick up everything to get me going. A helmet, tools, tubes, air pump. I have to change both my tubes already so I'm going to do that. I decided I want a stand to work on my bike, I also need to buy a carrier for my car. I think I'm going to buy those 2 items off CL or something like that. Any recommendations on what tools to be sure to buy, I want quality tools. Thanks guys I really appreciate your help. :)

    Basic bike tools:

    Hex wrenches (2mm-8mm)
    Tire levers
Tire pump(hand pump and/or floor pump)
    T25 Torx Wrench
    Patch Kit
    Emergency Tire Boot
    Chain breaker
    Chain checker

The above will help you with 80% of your normal maint.

This is in addition to normal shop tools: screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches.

There are other specialty tools, but as a beginner....most likely you won't use them til you start to learn more about the bike.

Invest in a stiff brush and some chain lube.

Water is your worst enemy on a bike....do not hose it down with high pressure nozzle.

For what you are going to use it for.....a work stand, any work stand will work.

Don't forget to get some smaller stuff you can carry on the bike! Get a small under seat bag big enough to hold a multitool, tube, tire lever, and maybe a small hand pump. The skinny fast guys like to carry CO2, but a mini pump never runs out of air.

I think Rocky is going to get the "go tubeless" speech faster than most newbs... :p

Not sure if it's been said and to be honest, I'm completely distracted by @MrGreedom 's post anyway but mountain bikers are different than their road riding counterparts. There are rules to follow.

    * Mountain bikers in SoCal don't wear spandex on the exterior....unless the 80's and 90's actually return....or you're racing XC competitively. Might as well try to avoid white socks while you're at it.

    * Mountain bike helmets have a visor...unless you're racing

    * Mountain bikers wear full fingered gloves and lastly

    * Mountain bikers are generally nice to each other and offer assistance to others who are stopped on the side of the trail

Pretty much what @mtnbikej said, but you don't need to get the allen wrenches and Torx bits at a bike shop. They may very well be cheaper at Sears or Home Depot.

If you are going to run tubes get a patch kit, learn to fix your tires and dont just trash them. It will save you enough money to buy something else on your ever growing list.

Thanks Mr! I'm kind of under the impression people here change the tube before just patching. I will definitely keep patches either way.

When you get a flat out on the trail it's usually quickest just to throw in your spare tube and patch the one with the puncture when you get home.

Just go tubeless and your spare tube will sit in your pack only to see daylight again when someone else needs it.

Most people here do not use tubes... For the reason that you quickly discovered on your maiden voyage. Flats suck.

Most of us use tubeless setups... And only carry a tube for a catastrophic tire failure- like a gash in the sidewall. Basically the inside of the rim bed is sealed with tape. Stans makes a tape, but some of us have had really good luck with Gorilla Tape. Add some liquid sealant that will seal most small leans, and presto!

And I checked- I believe that the wheels on your bike are tubeless compatible. They may already even have tape... :whistling: Honestly, though, I would try the tube thing for a little bit first. Tubes should be alright on the Floop...

Dont rely on tubes that have been patched. I was one of those riders with [eight] patches on my tubes (before converting to tubeless), but I got tired of random failures. My belief is that the patch kit is useful once you get a second flat on the same ride such that you’re out of spare tubes. Use the patch kit to get you home, but I wouldn’t keep a tube around for future use if it had been patched...just my opinion.

@mtnbikej hs you covered on tools.
If you can’t convert your rims/tires to tubeless, patch kit. When you pop a tire, change it on the trail then when you get home patch the popped tube. If/when you pop multiple tubes on the trail, patch em up!

Lol you checked for me Faust!? You're too much man, thanks! :D It sounds like tubeless IS the way to go. Assuming I am ready to go tubeless, are there any drawbacks? I really don't like flats, and was really surprised to only find thorns in my tire, and they pierced the tire like butter!

Tubes are not alright on the Floop due to thorns. Go tubeless.

Looking at the Marin website and the Performance website, it looks like they are "tubeless compatible."

You made a good choice and didn't even know it...
