Mt Bikers are Pre-Criminals!

I was reading the Laguna Beach Independent, and specifically, an editorial written by local radio host Billy Fried. In his editorial, he was summarizing each of the candidates for Laguna Beach City Council. The longest running member of the Council, Toni Iseman, evidently shared a ridiculous idea on Billy's radio show. Here's the text:


WTF? So how would that work, do you suppose? All riders register at one of the entrances using their legal ID. Rangers(?) patrol to make sure all riders are donning their bibs?

So hiker gets startled by mt. biker. They call somebody (ranger, police) and report the number. A warning or consequence gets levied against the mt. biker? Guilty!

I will contact her directly to get clarification of these comments. She probably sees herself as being helpful to mt. bikers as she probably is pressured to make mt. biking the trails in Laguna entirely illegal. I am guessing this "bib system" would be her response. Pre-label all mt. bikers as a danger.

I listened to the radio broadcast and heard her comments directly. She did follow up with the rhetorical question, "I don't know..is that too much of a police state?" The radio host and she then mentioned that tapping into the aging Rads - including Hans Rey and Brian Lopes - may be the key to more responsible riding.

This is why it is so critical that all of us ride with courtesy. But we can do all of the right things and the older hikers will still hate mt. bikes.

After I contact Iseman and get the details directly, I will return here and discuss any necessary collective actions we would need to take to stop the idea and make sure she is not re-elected.

 

I'll wear the bib. And nothing else! Write that down!

 

City of Laguna Beach has no jurisdiction in the surrounding county and state parks.
I’ve lived in Laguna for 20 years now and it’s always the same ten people running for city council. I don’t vote for any of them anymore and she sure as hell lost my vote. That bit by Iseman is complete insanity. I’m never gonna wear a goddamm number.

 

Yes. Very little of the trail system is in Laguna Beach, and there are several overlapping agencies with some authority. Either she was throwing an idea on the table with no thought, or she has thought about a coordinated effort including the OC Parks. I am guessing the former.

 

Iseman started with an anecdote of a female lawyer friend who was knocked down and injured by a mt biker on the local trails. According to Iseman, her friend’s concussion was so bad she had to quit practicing law.

Therefore, all mt bikers pose a threat, I guess.

 

I think she has an outstanding idea!

So as well Mrs. imtbtrails suggests...
While distributing said numbered bibs, you should go ahead and distribute them to all the criminals in the area! That way! When a criminal does a bad thing, you can just call in their bib number!

How about this:

Everyone who has started a wildfire, intentionally or not, has been a non-mtber. So, all non-mtb’ers have to wear a number and register with the land managers if they want to use the trails or live in a cabin in the wilderness, so we can easily identify if someone perpetrates

 

How can we know who’s a criminal ahead of time, if they’re not riding an mtb?

Ok, so we’d all have numbers
Step 1. Find out (insert riders name you want to play a joke on)’s number
Step 2. Switch out yours for his when riding
Step 3. Do some f’ed up s*** in front of angry hikers
Step 4. Profit

 

Ummmm, not sure how any of that is relevant.

Wait a minute. After really thinking about this, perhaps you are making reference to the stars and other identifiers that the Jews were forced to wear in Nazi Germany. Whooa man - extreme, but a valid example.

Is this going to be defined objectively or subjectively by the crime reporter?

I’m hoping that quote was just throwing mud at a wall and see what would stick. Not a move forward but just thought provoking idea tossing.

Hikers can be as clueless as any mtb'er.
And can you imagine, some disgruntled person will randomly call in numbers.

I say just ban everyone from the outdoors unless going to or from work and then require them to surf the net or play video games on their off hours. It's a very healthy way to live. I just don't understand why would anyone want to be outdoors and sweat.

 

And temp numbers for non-local visitors? Or does she think that all mountain bikers reside within Laguna Beach? Ahhh... They all look the same!

I'm guessing it was just a "throw it out there" comment to satisfy her aging hiker constituency until the election. That's a large voting block down there, isn't it?

 

That will never happen. Just a dumb idea. Boycotting bikes from the park? Yes could well happen....stick to the trails, dont ride like a jerk like you are on the 405 and be friendly

I hope you at least read his biography. This guy definitely sounds like a mountain biker! Although I think 7 years for stealing cigarettes at age 13 might have been a little excessive.
