I'm a history nut, and had a great time crawling all over Boston. Not going to bore you with all my photos, but I found this one particularly striking...

Fixed it for ya - sort of. Not a video per se, but a good song, nonetheless. Now are ya feelin' satisfied?

Oh, and I do like the city of Boston as well. Fun place, cool people - for the most part.

Eeerie history - you can actually feel it.

Yes I did. We hired a tour guide (a genuine history professor from one of the nearby colleges) to take us through the city. We went to the USS Constitution and Breed's Hill on our own, and did a road trip to see Lexington and Concord. Lexington was particularly sobering... the signs there did not mince words.

It is a little strange to note that in 1775 when hostilities in Boston began, the Spanish had only had a settlement in California for 6 years :) For some reason people think that Spanish California history goes back 100's of years. California had Spanish settlements for a total of 52 years. It was part of Mexico for 27 years. It has been part of the United States for 170 years (and counting). All this "reconquista" crap is just that - crap.

My wife's company HQ is in Boston so she goes back 2-3 times a year. I go once strictly for the food in the North End and to walk the Freedom Trail. I do a different tour every year and absolutely love the history and time period in general. I was amazed of the size of the USS Constitution and find it hard to believe they lived in such confined areas. Obviously, it was nowhere near as clean and tidy as it is nowadays either. If you ever go back, try Monica's Mercado on Salem St in the North End. Best sandwiches I've ever had in my life. Headed back there in 4 weeks and then on to NYC for my first time. Plan to hit their Italian district on Arthur St in The Bronx.

I think NYC is one of those polarizing places you either love or hate. I have been there numerous times and can't stand it. Dark, ugly, dirty, crowded. Chicago used to be my favorite big city, and I lived downtown for over 8 years. I had been to Boston many times on business, but my experience was relegated to airport - hotel - airport trips. Now that I have actually had a week to explore it, I love it. It reminds me of the best parts of Chicago without the nasty bits :) Seriously, you can be in downtown Boston, and drive out of the city and in less than 30 minutes be in deep forest and mountain foothills.

I also went lobstering and had the chance to go check out the outer harbor with a local who filled me in about the health of the oceans offshore. In the last 20 years they have completely cleaned up the harbor. It went from being one of the dirtiest to one of the cleanest in the country. They actually see dolphin in the harbor now.

I've always felt that Boston was a more liveable NYC. But if you ask local NYC people, they wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

Yeah I know. I attribute it to:
    (1) They don't get out much. Often when I meet a proud NYer who is bragging about how awesome the city is, I ask "in comparison to what other big city?"
    (2) A miasma that seeps out of the aged infrastructure that induces mass befuddlement.

Don't forget, New York was occupied by the British during the majority of the Revolution, and was the center of loyalist activity in the colonies. The Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776 with 12 of the 13 colonies voting in favor. New York abstained. Quite frankly New Yorkers are always going to be a little suspect :)

Fantastic work, MWRA! Yea, that green scum on the Charles River was a little out of hand in the late 80s. A great running town with lots of cool recreational opportunities in proximity.

Cool rundown on your visit, Greg. The history is palpable, ancient stuff everywhere. As a suburban sprawl rat, that was unique.

I did a long weekend in Boston a couple years ago... Great city. Some highlights:

    - Caught a Red Sox game. It felt weird being a life-long OC/Angels person but I went with it...
    - Walked the Freedom Trail all the way to Bunker Hill
    - Took a Duck Boat Tour. Luckily there were no incidents requiring life jackets.
    - Visited the JFK Museum and Library. Surprised nobody mentioned this. It's well worth visiting, especially if you've ever visited the JFK Museum at Dealey Plaza in Dallas.
    - Took a walking tour of Harvard University in Cambridge
    - Ate an (overpriced) Lobstah Roll in Faneuil Hall
    - Had dinner in the North End
    - Rented a car and drove to Salem, MA for the day. Witchcraft!!
    - Learned how to properly pronounce Worcester ("Woostah")

    Things that stood out
    - The Boston Accent. It's hilarious, especially when the person speaking gets angry, like the impatient shuttle bus driver at the airport
    - We got caught in several traffic jams on the "T", aka the subway. I laughed at how bad we Americans are at running these things compared to the Germans or the Chinese
    - The city was pretty clean - at least the parts I visited. I don't remember having to dodge much in the way of human excrement like in San Francisco
    - Better get TSA Precheck. If you don't have it, the security line at Logan Airport takes forever.....

See if I would have known about the JFK museum, I would have gone there. We did the Harvard thing also. Had the best Chicken Parm ever at Harvard Square.

As for the Redsox game, we bought tickets months ahead of time and it just so happened to be Derek Jeters last game at Fenway ever.

We also went to Salem as well Plymouth and then drove to NYC to see the Statue of Liberty.

Would do Boston again maybe in the spring when the weather is good. B3F0C686-0BBF-41FA-8757-56AFEE0EBA03.jpeg
