Winter Creek is in Chantry, actually above Arcadia, but close enough.
There is the clamshell stuff but it is all fireroad until you get deep.
Chantry is the best stuff around but it gets crazy crowded on the weekends.

Like @rossage said. Chantry... I used to ride there a lot in the early 90's before hiking was cool.

    lots of chunky rocks.

You're very close to the entrance of the San Gabes. You have more riding in this area then any other place in CA. 250 miles of designated trails according to the USFS. So much to ride:
    Chantry
    Strawberry Peak
Red Box to Switzers or soon all the way back to JPL
    Ken Burton Trail
    Sunset/El Prieto
    The Merrils
    Winter Creek
    Sturdevant (spelling is probably wrong)
    Mt. Wilson
and that's just the front range, there's a lot more deeper into the forest that is some of the funnest and best riding I've ever done. They have so many great rides in this area. I rode there every weekend for around 10 years or longer. After the big fire where they closed it to us I started just doing the local stuff and just haven't got back to riding much over there.

This pretty much sums it up but add Monroe Truck Trail and Marshall Canyon just to the east. A lil deeper up into the wilds is Silver Moccasin.

As stated, Chantry on weekdays ONLY! It's one of the most congested weekend destinations in the San Gabes.

Monroe and Marshall are my typical go to's, but seeing as I'm further west now, it's s little more feasible to get some of these more central areas without sitting in traffic.

Chantry looks good, probably the next step up from my usual trails.. Strawberry has been on my radar for a while as well..

I was looking at Brown mtn too, and giving el p a look,

Oh yeah, Chantry is a step up from Marshall, a pretty big step.
I recommend riding with someone else at first. You will get a big intro to Rocks and exposure 101. Immensely challenging at first, and rewarding when you "get it"
    Get some!

What would you suggest for a half step between Monroe/marshall and chantry?

I know the radivist said strawberry is good, and can be done on rigid/gravel bike... I thought that might be a good one to get used to some exposure...

Ha ha! Probably Brown El P.... There really is no half-step. I think getting used to the exposure is the hardest part.

I do Strawberry on a rigid 29er, with 2.4"tires... I'd like to follow someone trying it on a gravel bike. Actually, not!

El P is a technical trail, a great place to build skills and challenge yourself but a bad place to crash so be careful.

Brown Mountain up to and then back down from the Upper saddle is similar to MTT.

The fire road (from hwy 2) up the Mt. Lukens towers is a nice grind with spectacular views on a clear day.

I'd say Blue Bug ST is a good step up from from MTT. It's typical narrow ST that is not really technical, ya just gotta keep alert so that you don't fall off the side of the mountain, lol. There are a series of jumps on the lower section if you're into that. The 4 mile grind up Haines Canyon fire road to get there is gravel filled and bumpy in many sections.

Hard to compare anything to Marshall because it's got everything from mild to wild.
