Vans are the sht for camping.

If Toyota made one with 4WD and 10k-lb towing capacity I could think about getting another.

I would love to trick out my van but I need to be able to fill it up with our fair booth supplies.
If I could just insulate, floor, and put in a solar-battery system, then that would be enough for my needs.
Now, lifting and 4wd for a Transit is quite expensive so I doubt I'm going down that road....

Keep resisting. Once you build a bunch of furniture in there, goodbye utility. An RV is something different.

Just pull off the 395 and find a spot. Gotta love BLM land.

Yeah, I've been back and forth over it for years and utility always wins out for me and my needs.
I have done extensive camping in all types of weather in my uncoverted van.
Regular camping gear covers a lot of bases. An indoor rated Propane heater works wonders and an E-Z Up or tarp gives extra shady room for cooking and lounging. Why sit in the van when you wanted to be outdoors anyway...

As a former VW Westy owner, I like these a lot! Is that $28k price out the door, or is that just the conversion portion?
(I could read it, but where's the fun in that?)

Yeah, less than sprinter versions, but still add another $20-25k (new) since "*price does not include base vehicle"

A van would be cool to have for longer trips. I do ok in my truck but it can be hard to find (free) places to stay where there isn't BLM or National Forest land, and in urban areas. So stealth camping ability would be nice for places like Santa Cruz, for example. The recon looks nice but bikes would have to go outside, which I don't like. I could easily get by with a bare or minimally built out sprinter. Only problem now is I have no where to park it - won't fit in my garage and no street parking in my complex. My only other requirement would be some decent ground clearance for forest roads.

A-Hills: Good photo op; not as good a camping area. Too close to town and too easy for urchins to drive around there in the dead of night.

    I don't get it......

You buy a utility vehicle and convert it into a camper van that has no utility (can you store the bikes inside?).
As a camper and it too small for more than a one (or 2) night trip.
Might be better off buying a trailer (not a huge fan).
