Well, in lieu of dropping $$ for a dropper, I’ll be sporting a Thomson Elite paired with a Hope QR clamp... at least for awhile. I was able to cut a good 4.5” off the post, keeping an appropriate length for minimal insertion while still giving me plenty “drop” for decents.

    Great seatpost!

But it hurts me to think of how scratched up it's going to get as you drop and raise it during rides. :bang:

Nice! When you are ready for a dropper Thomson make a great one. Mine is 4yrs old with thousands of miles with no issues and no maintenance required.

Zen Trail in Utah... I broke my dropper through sheer mechanical incompetence. During the race, I hopped off at the top, and manually slammed it as low as it would go. Got some funny looks on the few flat sections going down, but it worked. :D

I'm not quick to drop the dropper, but this would have been nuts to try without one:

A dropper is like a full suspension bike. You don't need it...but...

Only MTB bikes I'll ride without a dropper are XC and DH, the two extremes.

Yeah, I was riding my rigid bike today, without a dropper. I missed the dropper more than I missed having a suspension fork...

Im sure I will. Once Im back at full strength with my shoulder and I’m able to ride a bit harder/faster, I’m sure that’s the direction I’ll go...

    That's the combo I rode pre-dropper...

Sadly I am a dropper addict now... Not sure how well I could ride without one.

You’d surprise yourself. We all did just fine before there were droppers.

Just think about a seat bag under you, keeping you from getting behind the saddle at all. Makes ya realize that you can do almost anything behind a rigid post. :geek:

You gotta get used to having a saddle in the gut once in a while. Or, for extended downhills, just drop the post and grunt the climbs.

I get bored with doing the same trails over and over so to make them more interesting I started going backwards, equipment-wize.
Hardtail with susp. fork and dropper: definitely fun
Hardtail with rigid fork and dropper: definitely fun, lessons in choosing lines, amazement at what can be done without suspension
Rigid hardtail without dropper: definitely fun, lessons in using your center of gravity, choosing lines, amazement at what can be done without suspension

Rigid hardtail without dropper is now my go to, but I will be getting a new dropper in the near future. They are addictive.

Love the Zen Trail. It used to be our day one ride after driving into town but then guys started complaining about working so hard on ride one so now we usually ride Guacamole or Church Rocks instead.

Yeah, learning to work with whatcha' have is pretty fun. Doing everything on a CX bike is a lot of fun as well.

I rode without a dropper last night, I borrowed an '18 Epic FS for the night. It sucks, don't do it (the dropper part). Unless you are all about super weight weenie, there is no reason to be riding a modern MTB without a dropper!

Exploration on a CX...not much fun. Or SART. Or, anywhere with rocks, just not 33mm friendly!

Might do a few fun laps at Skypark with it though, see how that works :)

Sure there is. Maybe you want a flexy or sus post. Maybe you run a seat bag. Maybe you don’t want to spend the money. Maybe you don’t want dropper failure in BFE. Some long rides require one or two seat height adjustments; hard to justify a dropper on those circuits.

Lots of different kinds of outings, terrain and riders out there, and for sure they aren’t all improved with a dropper. But, to each his own :)

I’m riding my backup bike without a dropper. I miss my dropper. I want my dropper. I don’t need my dropper to ride the P-lines. I need my saddle lower to avoid the P-lines. Hence my yearning for the dropper.

  21. Those hope clamps are the best ever made. I’ve had one on every bike since 2006
