Going to Mammoth next month for family stuff. Looking for lodging recommendations? We've been staying at the Austria Hof (love this place) for years for skiing but is it good for MTB? Any where else? Appreciate the input.

BLM land east of 395 at the S June Lake turnoff.

All you need is an LLPoolRV. Or you can suffer in a tent like evdog.

Sorry, Marty, I’m zero help.

Love VRBO, it can be cheaper than some of the lodges. Plus you don’t have to wheel bike thru hotel hallways. I like not having to dine out for every meal.

Four Seasons...Nice place and they have a bike valet for ya.

But since 4S is at the bottom of Blackcomb, maybe you will want to just stay at the Pan Pacific. They have a bike valet too. And a bike shop. And a great Irish Pub (Dublin Gate I believe). And a couple of pools. And about ten steps to the lifts. NOT secluded.

Walk your bike in the village!

EDIT: This advice is much better if you are actually headed to Whistler and not Mammoth. :bang:

    Is this the area??? https://www.google.com/maps/@37.8135905,-119.0544982,274m/data=!3m1!1e3

I was wondering where dispersed camping recommendations in the area were, it seemed like a good place to stop.

I’ve bivied out there in winter with 4x. Less than 18” of snow you can still get to a hiding spot. Guaranteed no neighbors...bring a snow shovel.

The southeastern shore of Grant Lake is another great spot, albeit more known and likely to be occupied. But I have scored it vacant. Unmarked dirt road west off 395, high clearance maybe, no 4x.

Like others have mentioned vrbo or we have also used mammothreservations.com which has a pretty good website with pics of the condos with a rating system (stay in the upper 90s and your wife will be happy). We usually stay at The Summit condos.

If you want to pay a little more for newer condos look at Mammoth Greens and Snowcreek phase 5.

If I'm taking the family, I rent a condo at Juniper Springs, mammoth usually has some kind of deal that they email out every year that would reduce the cost by 25%. And when I was done for the day, I would take the gondola up to the top and ride Skid Marks to Juniper right back to my condo.

But If it family-free trip, I just bum someone's couch or camp around the Lake Basin area, its cheap especially if you're sharing the site with a handful of others.
