Just saw this post on the Over The Hump Racing Facebook page -

    • leave open space trails open year round
    • consider changing some designation of "hiking only trails" to "multi-use"

Wow. Not sure if I can make this due to prior commitments, but might be nice if some of us could get there

Does that mean trails like rabbit run, fox run, etc. will be open all the time?
    Unfortunately can’t make the meeting.

Cool, I’ve never ridden those since the open acces days are Saturdays when I’m at work

Wow, I hope so. That would give me another regular riding spot. I love Cattle Crest. Hopefully that hiking only trail off to the right of the fire road goes multi-use ... I have never hiked it but some hikers have told me it has some gnar.

Followed the links...no info, not actually on the agenda and the item link leads to a one-page cover sheet.

So I went through Irvine's website. Same thing. Something is rotten in Denmark....

Another guess, it might be the "CITY BIKEWAYS AND WALKWAYS" item, after "PRESENTATIONS" and before "ANNOUNCEMENTS"?

That's not an agenda item. Those are numbered, below that. That is the link to the one-page pdf cover sheet.

Edit: Don't get me wrong, I hope the open access get changed as indicated. I just couldn't find it on the agenda anywhere, through the link. Or from Irvine's webpage.

    @Runs with Scissors

It’s the community services commission meeting, not the city council meeting. And there’s going to be a presentation about Irvine bikeways and walkways. And someone at over the hump has said it will relate to the use of open space. No reason not to show up to the meeting and have our voices heard re opening open space and more trail access.

Yep, and agreed. Just noting it's not obvious to amyone trying to find it.

I got there late and missed the presentation. There were a large number of bikers there mostly from the El mo crew or something.

The chair of the commission wants to go take a look at the open space trails. It also sounds like they’re going to have another meeting where someone from the Irvine Conservancy is present. Hopefully someone else will have a better report!

More frequent open access days would be best, but they will need more volunteers i guess

Opening it permanently would be even better. What is the upside of not allowing access?

The upside is that there is some undisturbed space for wildlife. When you go into these areas you do see the difference.

This leads back to "if no one is allowed in, who will care about it?" People have to be able to see it to take care of it.

The trails already exist...there is no downside to having them open all the time.

The trails make up a tiny fraction of the parks. The rest is all undisturbed space for wildlife.

I agree with you on this one. I’ve never been a proponent of no-access conservation.
Difficult-acces conservation (leaving trails natural and challenging and banning motor vehicles)? That’s just fine!

You can see it every month and actually more frequent than that via the free docent led rides. I am in favor of higher frequency of open access but they will likely need more volunteers. I am currently bit time constrained with new little one but i am planning to sign up and contribute.

I am not in favor of no access conservation but that is not the case here.

With less frequent human activity the areas have a better chance to thrive. It is not the actual trail surface that matters but the cutting/splitting of the undisturbed habitat area.

The South Coast Wilderness area is a unique habitat home to many many species. We are really lucky to still have it (google Laguna Laurel btw: without protests there would have been no Stairsteps/Cholla/T&A..!).

    Of course opinions differ!

I love the open space trails and ride them probably 8 times a year.... BUT I don't think I'm a fan of having them open all the time. There is a visible difference to the trails in the Open Space vs everywhere else due to the lack of traffic.
