My son just started his practices for the upcoming NICA Season. He is 11 years old and in the middle of his 6th grade year. Dan will be racing with the Corona Composite Mountain Bike Team.

I have been really impressed with the coaches and the team. The kids are really supportive of all of the different skill levels.

Dan will be riding a 2015 Cannondale F-SI Carbon 2 29'er with the 1x11 SRAM setup.

He will be using a road bike for the garage workouts with Wahoo sensors for Speed/Cadence/HR.

I am excited to watch Dan's progression through the season. Hopefully a few other members have kids competing. It would be cool to hook up at the races.

I've said it before here and elsewhere, the NICA/SoCalDirt HS races are amazing! I have a sophomore, an eighth grader, and now a sixth grader this year. The races are a blast to go to, and the athletes are all amazing!
Corona has the Bemis sisters (Madeline graduated, right?), who are out and out amazing!!!

It's interesting that most interscholastic mt. bike racers - at least in SoCal - quit while in high school. The lure of the car, and participation in other scholastic sports seems to cut into MtB on a grand scale. My niece and nephew ride for their HS team in Murrieta, along with about three others. Same experience here in Laguna. The Middle Schoolers come out in droves - no high schoolers.

Best wishes for all of our IMTB offspring racing NICA!

It's a shame, as the league is so incredibly positive. I suppose there's vicious competition going on, but I just don't see it. EVERYBODY cheers every kid on, just louder for some :) Races are fantastic fun. Basically big camp outs. Getting girls racing is the trick, and keeping them through high school is the second hurdle.

It's still a word of mouth thing. Basically the kids have to have a parent that rides MTBs. Then they get the kids in, ride with then, check their gear, etc. While money is an issue for a bike, fees, etc, having the parent that rides and is connected in the local MTB community is the trick.

What's really weird is lack of beer at the races. Who knew!!!

HS kids don't usually want to do what their parents are into. They are programmed to reject their parents' tastes and to think everything their parents do is completely uncool.

I wish they would sometimes reject their parents' values, but that's another story.

I grew up windsurfing with my dad from about 8 years old all the way through college. I had so much fun on the weekends and going on family vacations to different windsurfing venues. My 11 year old is almost to the point where he can keep up with me on the adult rides. Watching @Grego ride with his son is proof that the sport brings families together.

A COLD and WINDY day out at Lake Perris today! The Redlands Composite Team picked up the leader jersey in both the sophomore and JV races, as well as the points lead in their league classification!

My racer is going to be out for a while though... While he came in DFL for his race, he did so with THREE BROKEN RIBS from a crash in the first lap!!!!

    This kid is amazing!

@Mikie Those pics are from San Tan Regional Park near Queen Creek, AZ. It is an awesome place to ride. Nothing technical, but lots of flowy trail to play on.

My son had a great first race at lake Perris. He finished 27 out of 62 for the 6th grade boys. He gave the race everything he had and left a little puke after the finish line. We are going to preride Vail tomorrow to prep for this weekend.

These pics are from last Saturday during a training ride at Sycamore. The rain gave us great conditions to play on.

Thanks, I think he will. He was beat up pretty bad that day! He's starting riding to school tomorrow (he hates having to be driven in). Won't race this weekend @ Vail, but maybe in two more weeks @ Keyesville.

Wet day at Vail today, but the rain decided to take a break during all 3 Saturday races. The dirt was amazing.

Dan got 26 out of 52. His buddy Chad on the team was able to get first place out of 52.

    Momentum hill did not disappoint.

2 races in 2 weekends. My son and I went to Keyesville last week and to vail lake this past Saturday. Both race courses were set up well.

My son got wiped out in Vail while descending tunnel of love, but he was able to hop back on his bike and finish strong.

    Water crossing at Keyesville.

Keyesville is so great... I love that place. Hope your son had a good time, and wants to come back for some more next year!

This season was such a bummer with Jake fracturing some ribs at the first race... He could have raced today, but with no fitness built up, it wouldn't have been much fun at all. The worst part is he was his fastest ever in pre-season rides... hangin' with the big guns for good portions of the practices. Will have to wait till next year!

    Donating bikes to NICA teams....?

A while back I heard about someone soliciting bike donations for middle and high school MTBers, I think it was someone in the IE. Now I can't seem to find anything about it. Does anyone know of such a thing? I have a bike that I think would make a good start for an MTB racer that can't buy one.

I am a coach for our NICA team in Corona. We have had gear donated to the team and the families always appreciate it. Hit me up. We are having our first team meeting on Oct 5th.
