IMBA is chasing the money. They are no longer doing this in our best interest....they are just following the mighty $$$.

Sadly this survey will do no good but I’ll put in my 4 cents to pay the taxes.

Shouldn't they have done a survey like this BEFORE they changed their stance to support e-bikes on non-motorized trails?

They will not get another penny from me. I'll support projects for my local club and others like TAMBA, Sierra Buttes etc. I suspect San Diego Mtn Biking Association will terminate its chapter status over this.

What do you think about e-bikes?
"eBikes are motorized and do not belong on NON MOTORIZED trails. IMBA, please grow a spine and stop chasing $$ from corporate sponsors like Specialized. I will not be renewing my membership because of your new found support for e-bikes. I will be pushing my local chapter SDMBA to dissociate from IMBA."

    Ev,
Where/when did they make that statement. I missed that. Isn't Greg Herbold in charge of IMBA now?

Dave Weins is ED of IMBA now. They recently released an update on their e-bike stance.

IMBA Shifts Stance on E-Bikes and Now Supports Allowing Access on Some Trails

Mountain biking's biggest advocacy group makes a small but important change to its policy on e-mountain-bikes.

I dropped a note on their contact page. If you too want to drop a line to IMBA you can easily use this email: info@imba.com

    My Note:
    Thanks a lot...
My mountain bike forum, imtbtrails is becoming enraged with your new position on eBike accessibility. You are being considered a sell out to the corporate machine. I'm sure you have your negotiating reasons for justifying such a position. To be clear, your position should be against ANY motorized vehicles masked as bicycles on non motorized trails. Period.

For the cycling purist which your organization was founded on you have turned your back on them. I stopped becoming a member of IMBA years ago. Recently had communication with your new leadership and told him I will be watching. Well... I'm watching and I'm not liking it. There is lots of talk now of chapters pulling out of the IMBA camp. This may very well be the demise of IMBA.

I certainly no longer support you. I also am advising my forum to not support you. We can only hope that another organization will rise up and replace and take a real stance on motorized vehicles which we so often get mixed in with.

    Very. Disappointed.

Under the last part of the survey, "Tell us what you think about e-MTBs", this was my response: "They have no place on most trails. Here in California we regularly experience catastrophic wildfires, and some of our trails here in Orange County will be closed for months, if not years, due to recent fires. Having seen an e-MTB explode in a shower of sparks, I am 100 percent against their use on our trails. Even without the wildfire danger, the encroachment of e-MTBs will most assuredly keep us from gaining access to areas we don't currently have, such as Federal wilderness areas. If IMBA continues its support of e-MTBs, I will no longer be a member."

Here's what I wrote in their comment section:

    1) Bicycling with a motor is no longer cycling.
    2) Their use on non-motorized trails in Orange County Parks and the National Forest threatens access for legal users.
    3) They deprive users of the challenge of climbing under their own power and earning their turns.
    4) They are being pushed on the cycling community by greedy bicycle and motor manufacturers and sold by bike shops without the caveat that they're illegal on most or all our public single track.
    5) Those selling and promoting them for use on non-motorized trails are engaged in killing the soul of our sport for monetary gain.

What I said: If I want to twist a throttle I grab the KX-500 or CR-125 OR YZ-125 mix up some Motul at 2-oz per gallon, at 62-to-1 then go riding where I belong. I don't go where Hikers-Horses-MTBers go. Tech will make E so good we will all be kicked out. Shame on you. If you want to be an off-roader go get a KTM.

I find this flip-flop in position interesting, given their own USER SURVEY results showed the lack of support:

    What I sent:

Thank goodness I live in California, where eBike trail use is already regulated. Keep your eBikes in Colorado, thanks. I now have much less desire to visit there with your dirt bike “wilderness” trails.

And I guess you are going to have to change your name as well as your position statement, since you are no longer the International Mountain Bicycling Association. My suggestion: the International Mountain Motorized Vehicle Association. IMMVA. Has a nice ring to it. Guess I’ll have to throw out all my old IMBA gear… since it is no longer relevant.

    Disappointed… and saddened.
