I DIDN'T ride my bike today... because I was picking trash out of Trabuco Canyon! 10 full garbage bags of bottles and cans later... plus car parts, home stereo components, a computer keyboard, an almost full 1.75 liter bottle of vodka, several gallons of used motor oil, a traffic cone, car jack...

And then while poking under some bushes where there had been a recent landslide, I found this:

My kids had to learn that story in elementary school at Trabuco Mesa... People have been looking for that for a couple hundred years.

That can't be the subject of the legend. :eek:

It's a cap and ball musket, so that puts it in the mid 1800's. They first arrived on the scene around 1830, and were pretty universally replaced by cartridge rifles in the 1870's.

That is... assuming it is original which it most likely is not. It is probably a replica - I have a hard time believing a musket would last for 150 years in the banks of Trabuco Canyon.

  9. Incredible find regardless of actual historical details. Like even if some weirdo just buried it there last week it's an amazing unique find.

I cleaned up El Trabuco... he looks much better now :) The thing weighs a ton. The barrel is a big chunk of iron.

Did somebody say, "Drop your weapon!"? ;)

That musket would look mighty fine up on a wall.. maybe along with a Trabuco Ranger District sign. I'm not saying steal one, just that the two items would be great together!

For what it's worth, this original Kentucky long rifle just sold at auction for $302. Even original, in good condition, they aren't worth a ton...

Any distinguishing marks? It would be neat to narrow it down even further.

And boy... It does look similar to the Kentucky long rifle.

Yes it looks quite similar. The stock on my rifle appears to have been broken near the end of the barrel. When I found it, all that was sticking out of the dirt was the end of the barrel. I originally thought it was some kind of heavy pipe.

I'll have to take a closer look... but sadly many of the iron fittings are corroded. The brass fittings are in much better shape.

[EDIT] On closer inspection there is engraving on the front plate and definitely some writing... but I cannot tell what it is. I think I can make out the word "Park" or "Parks". There are also two initials engraved on the top of the barrel in a fine, flowing script. The two initials appear to be "H or K" and "I or L". Not much help.
