A friend wanted to join one of my long rides....I figured I'd break him in on an easy one, plus he had never done this loop before. He is a strong fire road climber, but I wanted to see how well he handled a long technical climb. Unfortunately yesterday he had to bail on the ride.

No problem since @Faust29 and @cajun were already on board. With the warm temps today, we planned an early start....sort of. Faust and I started from Taco Plaza @ 6:15 in the sunshine..... @cajun would meet us at HJ parking lot.

The bike choice today was the Hightower....I had a date with Trabuco Trail.

The ride up Trabuco Creek Rd. was typical.....not exciting, but we just kept plugging along. Picked up Greg in the parking lot and we were off. Didn't push the pace....the plan was for a social ride. As we started up Holy Jim it was still shaded and kinda cool. I was still waiting for my legs to show up.

I settled into a comfortable gear and just turned it. Didn't feel like I was going fast or slow....but slower than on the SS. Still cleaned all the switchbacks. After the turn for the Falls, we had the trail to ourselves. Temps warmed up a good amount when we got above the switchbacks. Before too long we made Main Divide. The bugs swarmed right at the top of the HAB....so we pushed on out the road a little ways were they were not an issue.

We continued on towards the Wall. I thought with all the gears it would be no problem. I had spent most of the day so far in the 32 & 36t cogs..I went into the 42t at the bottom of the Wall. No go...too rocky...too loose...too torn up. This was also the only time we ran across traffic out there today.

The ride over to Trabuco Trail was uneventful....except I was still searching for my legs. This ride is easier on the SS.

Once at Trabuco and a short break...we threw the GoPro on my bike. We then took off. It was time for my date with Trabuco. I had it pinned along the top section. Blew a few turns that were pretty loose. Had to slow for a large group of riders coming up. Also had a bug that was threatening to crawl into my ear slow me down bit. Pushed it and pushed it. Thought about stopping and waiting at the Trabuco/WHT split but decided to continue on to the bottom. Had a few questionable lines....and a few close calls. Even passed a pissed off rattler near the bottom creek crossing.

Got to the bottom and waited for the others to come down.

All that was left was the ride back down Trabuco Creek Rd. Just passed the RC Airport was a water truck helping to keep the dust down......that certainly didn't suck.

    Finished off with tacos.

My run down Trabuco Trail was fast.....but I got robbed. I didn't move far enough from the gate at the bottom so it continued to count the time as I waited for the boys. Strava clocked me at 28:45 overall, but my moving time was 10:52. However I did take a KOM on a hidden segment from Main Divide to the bottom of Yeager Mesa.

    29 miles / 5300' but that isn't correct....it's about 500' high.

    Fun times on the mountain.

Fun day... Much easier getting to Trabuco when the other two guys (@mtnbikej and @cajun ) brought the heavy bikes with the gears. :whistling:

Edited version of Jason's run from Main Divide to the creek crossing.

And the most important part of the day.

Ive said it before and I will say it again.

I wanna do that ride. The video reminds me of MTT. Fairly smooth and very fast and very little need for brakes.

Actually....not like MTT. Quite a lot of scree and chunk. The video makes it looks smoother than it actually is. It is really slippery right now.

It's one of my favorite trails, but it's a lot rougher than MTT... You can't tell from the video, but the scree is thick and deep. There are actually a couple small drops that he hit so fast they look flat.

Any time you want to make the drive down here, @SnakeCharmer. It's a great loop...

Edit: Also... Trabuco is like 3 trails in one. The video above is the 2.5 mile section from Main Divide down to the creek level. That part has a lot of fast and twisty up top through the trees, before it descends into the scree section, and ends at the creek. After the creek crossing, it's not as steep, but it's still fast and rocky for another 1.5 (ish) miles. That part isn't in the video...

I do it on the SS all the time.....just depends on how chunky you are willing to ride on the hardtail.

That was hectic! Nice run @mtnbikej - especially through the scree. I think you must be the scree master, based on this and your KoM on Screevarado Motorway. Who needs positive contact with the ground anyway! You would have made a great ski racer.:cool:

Just watched most of this...it looks WAY more fun than Holy Jim!!! No stupid blown out 180* switchbacks, either. On my list!

Ummm, is this the same Trabuco that is the last descent on VQ?
