  2. Unfortunately I was on injured reserve, and stopped riding for all of NOV-DEC. I was in physical therapy for lower back pain, and we discovered my right hip has mobility problems and my pelvis was out of alignment and basically most of the connecting tissue of my right leg was all stiff, and short and not moving well. Recent x rays show zero skeletal problems in my hip/pevis. that's good.
I am back riding now, did 11 mile yesterday and did not die. However, I will need to work to get full mobility back. Need to get back to PT for a plan. This explains some of my frustration with progress earlier in 2017. I kept pushing harder, problems getting worse.

I have resolved that I have to have a GREAT Chiropractor. That guy has been my most awesome Go To guy! Once a month, whether I need it or not I go and have him tweak me back in to alignment. Best thing I have ever done.

  7. I drank tailwind and coffee all morning, then went and did 14 miles just now. Climbing mustard sucked. but I did not die. Right quad is cramping. Maybe a rest day or light spin tomorrow. or I'll just rub some tailwind on it.

That's right--make a paste and rub it in. Avoid the caffeinated versions or you might get restless leg syndrome.

I'd have to have 8 servings to equal the caffeine I just drank for our ride tonight!

Um ...make that 12 servings. :whistling:

Anyone else get thirsty, I mean THIRSTY, after a while using Tailwinds on a ride?

I've used it twice now (mandarin orange flavor, no caffeine, 8 scoops in 100 oz. and then 9 scoops in 100 oz.) and it works for me to completely replace food on the ride.
1st ride was ~18 miles, 2 hrs 30 min., 3000' gain, 2nd ride was 14 miles, 3 hrs 30 min., 3100' gain. (Those are moving times, total elapsed time was longer on each ride.)

I'm not hungry during the ride, but I'm noticing that I'm craving plain water after a while. Tom the Bomb and I talked about this, and we sorta think it could be an intended side effect to keep me drinking.

Anyone else experience this? Do you just live with it or bring plain water along also?

PS - As a side note, it feels like it's allowing me to push a little longer before real fatigue and cramping threaten to shut me down, which could be a good boost from improved training effect (tho I'm not training for anything, except the next ride).

If it’s a ride long enough that I need to carry a pack, I’ll keep plain water in the pack and a bottle of heavily mixed Tailwind on the bike. Swig of Tailwind, with a plain water chaser... If I’m away from a water source, I can mix a bottle with the water from the pack, as I did on Main Divide yesterday.

I also switch to plain water for the last hour or so, to clean out the system. This works for long rides, like Saturday’s death march.

For shorter rides, in the 2-3 hour range, I’ll usually take a bottle of Tailwind and a bottle of water.

Same as @Faust29 I use a bottle for Tailwind and water in my Camelbak or another bottle for shorter rides. Yesterday I did 25+ and 3800' on 4 scoops in a 24oz bottle of water. I tried the 8 scoops in 100oz on a big ride once and like you @redwoods I craved plain water after awhile. I guess it is similar to eating without anything to wash it down.

For me it's tailwind in the pack mixed a bit thinner than recommended(roughly 1 scoop per 15oz water) and a plain water bottle for the occasional chaser later in the day. Its yet to fail me and still not hungry till after the ride.

For me, it takes a long time before I need a swig of water. I seem to be able to go with just TW for hours. Usually I'll drink water at the refill spots, but I usually don't have to.

Then again, I don't drink that much on a ride anyway.

Pat, what are you doing the day before? I think 4-6 quarts of water in the 24 hours leading up to a ride makes a tremendous difference that can't be made up for during the ride. For bigger rides, give it more time and water. Marathoners know...and the effort we put into rides is all of a marathon and more.

+1 on the Tailwind in the Camelbak. I do carry a 20oz bottle of pure water on the bike. It happened twice that I got this chalky taste that more Tailwind could not satisfy, so I will swig some pure water and that seems to kill it. I vary between 7 to 9 scoops in 100oz. 7 scoops when it's hot, and 9 scoops when it's cold. I notice I drink a lot less water when it's cold, but yah still need to eat! Runners even super concentrate it in a small bottle to carry to reduce volume and weight but still get the food source.

    I hope this helps Pat!

Mike, I agree. When it's a bigger ride, I do drink extra water the day before, sometimes starting 2 days before, and I don't drink alcohol for 1-2 days or more beforehand. (Not a heavy drinker anyway, but I've learned that this helps.)
I'm not ending up dehydrated (at least on these 2 rides in question). It's the sensation of thirst I'm experiencing.

Mikie, I may try extra water, but that's significant weight to add to my pack...my bike doesn't have a good place for a bottle cage. Hmm...
