Trying a route suggested by @scottay. Up to Leprechaun first, then up the FS road from the lake, up Boy Scout then either down Middle Jackson or Deer Trail/Boy Scout. A little of everything!

Previous Ride Reports:
Possible Bail-Outs: After Leprechaun loop. You can turn around on the Boy Scout climb anytime to return to the lake.
Facilities: Water at Jackson Group Camp
Food/water suggestions: Bring lots of fine H2O. It will be hot (mid 70's to low 80's) and dry.

I have not ridden since last Saturday.
I broke s rear spoke on GE, then discovered my Bombproof CK rear hub is not bombproof (just after I said it was). Waiting on the drive side shell bearing from Bike Bling to show. If it does, I would like to be there.

So you are suggesting dropping Leprechaun first then the climb up BoyScout. I like it! We always leave Leprechaun for last, that's a good idea. Let you know tonight.

As you know, I don't like climbing. To me all climbs are different shades of awful but especially climbs at the end of the ride which is how we usually do Leprechaun. On my last group ride in Wrightwood back in May, we were discussing this and @scottay suggested looping Lep back to the lake and then climbing the road to Boy Scout and further options. That puts the uniquely horrible climb out of Leprechaun at the beginning of the ride. I thought that was brilliant so that's why I thought I'd try it out tomorrow.
I was also thinking of adding Fenner Canyon trail. Another hideous climb after the trail but it's in the middle of the ride and would add a few more miles. Then most likely Deer trail and down Boy Scout.

 

Nice route, climbing is tolerable.

Just a thought Greg, I find climbing back up Fenner more disirable than the fire road because it's short, once you start hitting the switch backs it's not that fun unless you can pivot on your front wheel to make the turn. But then again I don't mind climbing either.
