The weather Gods were good to us today!
Clear skies w/ views of the ocean.
We had a great group of 12 riders today.
Well 13 but Jose dropped us like bad habit! Never saw him after the start of the ride.

Tom the Bomb, Pat (Redwoods), Todd (Bluesrider), Luis, Mark (Doublewide), Roxy(Ridingrox), Cisco (Cisco Roots), Steve (Faust29), Eric (Eric H MWBA), Berni (Bigringrider101), Jose, and me (abuck55).

We had one scare today: T-Bomb pedal-bashed a rock on Middle Merril and down he went.. He fell down into some steep granit rocks. Looked like Tom was about 15 foot down the rocks and his bike was about 50 foot down. Thank God for Tom's cat-like landing. He was ok.
    Don't do that sh$t again Tom! :)

All in all it was a great day of riding.
I got to meet some great new people: Steve (Faust29), Jay (MtnbikeJ), Eric (Eric H MWBA), and Berni (Bigringrider101)

Jay and Steve did this ride on single speeds!
    (No thanks!)
Berni did on a full rigid bike! (Nice!)
Great riding with all of you guys and girl today!!
    Let's do more!...

Awesome ride today folks. Thanks for calling it. I didn't take many photos today but this ride deserved a "shower beer" once I was home.

image.jpeg image.jpeg What a ride today! I don't even know where to start and what I should talk about but let's just say it was definitely an adventure today.

    Here are some pics though.

Sorry....I didn't take any pics to post up.

Got there a bit early, and it was cold....really cold. Others started showing up. Did the meet and greet. Geared up and headed out.

First time out here for me.

Short road ride to the start of the dirt...kinda made for a nice warm up.

Once we started up the first climb, it was clear that this was a legit climb. We all stayed together for a little bit, but kinda splintered apart. A few regroups. Before I knew it, was at Mt Lowe RR. The rest of the group rolled in. @abuck55 said most of the hard climbing was over. However we were missing a rider.....apparently @Faust29 missed a turn and continued up to the saddle. After a short break, we headed up to the saddle.

Fire road climb wasn't bad....hopped on @Cisco Roots back wheel and he pulled us for a while. After a couple of regroups we pushed on to Inspiration Point. Finally got to see some of the dreaded Poodle Dog Brush. Got pretty cold at Inspiration Point. Turned around and headed down. New dirt, new DH....took it easy. Quickly we had an incident. @Tom the Bomb thought he saw a dime on the trail so he jumped down to get it....saw it was only a penny and threw his bike over the side. :whistling: Anyway, took 8 of us to get his bike back up, and we were off again. Trail was much chunkier than I thought it would be....but it was fun. Walked a few spots...probably rideable if I had ridden it more. There was a little jockeying of positions. Ended up behind @Luis, and his lack of rear brake....nice ride with only the front brake most of the time.

Quick spin back up to the saddle again, and down Sunset Ridge??? A little more flow, and still some chunk. Had @doublewide ridding my ass at this point....hope I didn't slow you up too much.

Finally made it down to El Prieto....flowy and chunky and flowy and chunky. Before we knew it .....it was over.

Totally worth the drive up there. Great trails. Super group of riders. Was nice to finally put some faces to some screen names.

Turned out to be a great day on the mountain.

Thanks @abuck55 for setting this up. Good times.

This was the view when I pulled over to call mtnbikej to tell him that I just remembered that my helmet was hanging safely on the garage wall, and he should go on without me. I owe him lunch.

The temp when I pulled into the gas station to fill my kid's Jeep that I didn't plan on driving all the way today... 10mpg. Ouch.

Shitty and I got another invite to ride SJ today. It was so tempting to have a "do-over", sleep in by another hour, drive 30 mins vs 90...Hmmm, decisions decisions.

My conscious won. I remarked to Shitty that I can't flake again. I'm so glad we decided to do it.

It was a bit chilly in the beginning but the road ride up to the trailhead is a good warm up. But just in case it wasn't, I filled my water bottle a few ounces of JD's Tennessee Honey Whiskey. Only takers: Eric, Luis and me. Our bellies stayed nice and toasty.....:ninja:

Middle Merrill is a butt pucker nightmare but I LOVED IT!! A few more runs on that trail and I should be able to make everything but the impossible. :whistling:

Sunset is my favorite more than El P. J rode the bottom half of Sunset on my arse, talking the whole time. I finally had to shout: S.T.F.U!! :p

By the time we reached the bail out point of Brown Mountain CG and the road, Shitty and I had had enough. So we bailed bc I CAN!

Thanks for the memories guys. Nice meeting more of my dirt brothas!!

Nice RR and awesome pics Mark!!! :inlove:

So the pictures lie? I don't mind it going up hill...I'm going really slow there. It's the downhill with ungodly 180 degree switchbacks that get me.

@mtnbikej - There was a section that we mentioned you, @Runs with Scissors. It wasn't far from where Tom the Bomb had his spill, and we were carrying our bikes over a small chasm that may or may not have been trail. This ride had some legitimate exposure!

The Middle Sam Merril Trail (?) makes the Luge look like pavement... I was white knuckled there in a few spots, and only rode some because I watched the lines that @ridinrox and @bigringrider101 were taking. If I hadn't had them in front, I would have walked most of it. It was incredible terrain to see, though...

I wish I had some pictures of that section, and the features... I didn't feel comfortable stopping there to take pics.

Thanks all for the thoughts. I have never crashed going that fast before. Felt a pedal bash and instant eject, I remember seeing nothing but jagged rocks and thinking this might not turn out well! Landed in the rocks briused up palms and right thigh, big scrape on left thigh. As I looked up I could not see my bike, then out of the blue it comes crashing to the earth. When it hit sparks flew and it went another 20 feet. It must have been 20 feet in the air! The first hit must have been on a tire for it to bounce that high, second hit on the left crank arm at the bb. The boys formed a life line to pass the bike up. Frame check, brake check, bar check, chain check, flat tire check, all good right? Wrong! As I got on the bike stem was crooked, thanks Mark for helping straighten that out. Started rolling and notice a sizable wabble in the tire. Figured I broke a cord in the rubber, not! Looked down and half of 2 spokes were missing! Bummer since the best part of the ride was ahead. Continued to ride it out being careful on the drops and made it out successfully . Kudos to roval fatties! Thanks Mark for a great ride and everyones assistance. Awesome group of people, good times.

Hahaha yea that was the rear brake complaining that I was dragging it. Had to pump the brake lever like 5 times for it to get a little pressure. As soon as I let it go, pressure was gone. That's why I washed out on that turn on sunset trail. Front wheel don't turn so well when braking hard.

I didn't see the actual point of impact but I did see you and your bike tumbling down the jagged rock garden . Your bike was actually flying and twirling in the air, it was pretty surreal. I'm glad you made it out okay, could've been WAY worse!

Big thanks to Mark for puttin this ride together and thanks to all those that made it out here from beyond LA County! Great group of riders and great to finally meet you all, @mtnbikej @Faust29 @doublewide I had a blast!
